Duties

Help
  • You will screen incoming communications to prioritize emergency/non-emergency calls and situations.
  • You will determine the response agency and services to be rendered based on the severity of situation and manpower availability.
  • You will operate a variety of communications equipment (e.g., Computer Aided Dispatch [CAD], emergency radios, enhanced 911, Enterprise Land Mobile Radio (ELMR), Telecommunication Devices for the Deaf (TDD), to communicate dispatch instructions.
  • You will provide post-dispatch and pre-arrival instruction to numerous and dissimilar emergency response assets.
  • You will instruct callers with emergency first aid techniques until emergency services arrive.

Qualifications

TYPING PROFICIENCY:
This position requires the ability to type at least 40 words per minute.

GS-07: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Dispatching emergency vehicles; performing incoming and outgoing multi-phone line operations; assessing incoming emergency calls with Standard Operation Procedures or guidelines to determine the proper course of action; dispatching in a high volume/urgent environment.

GS-06: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Dispatching emergency vehicles; performing incoming and outgoing multi-phone line operations; assessing incoming emergency calls with Standard Operation Procedures or guidelines to determine the proper course of action; dispatching in a high volume/urgent environment.

GS-05:
Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Operating radio communication equipment to dispatch services; Receiving incoming telephone or alarm systems calls.

For the GS-05 position, you may also qualify based upon the education or the combination of education stated in the Education Section of this announcement.

Education

For the GS-05 position: In lieu of specialized experience, you may also qualify based on education as follows:

Successful completion of four years of education above high school level

OR

Have a combination of education and specialized experience as described above that equates to one year experience.

Working Environment: The normal worksite is within a climate controlled Regional Dispatch Center facility. Employees may be required to work long periods without breaks.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to meet the pre-employment requirements, including failure to report to any of the scheduled appointments.

Physical Demands: Walking, standing and stooping, reaching and handling/grasping documents may occur in performing duties of the position. Must be able to use a computer keyboard and perform frequent, repetitive typing motions. Incumbent must be able to read information on computer screens. Must have color vision adequate to distinguish between green, red, and yellow lights on alarm and other equipment. Must be able to write and speak English clearly and distinctly. Must be able to clearly hear conversations over the phone, radio and telephone-operator headsets regardless of the age or sex of the caller and to distinguish between different audible alarm tones used in dispatch. Incumbent may use hearing correction devices to augment natural hearing in order to meet the requirements listed. Emergency nature of work, rigid time constraints for response actions, emotional state of persons calling, nature and consequences of the decisions incumbent is required to make categorizes this position as one of high mental and emotional stress.
