Help

As a Librarian within the Libraries Program, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Use library systems to support and perform ILL and document delivery tasks such as processing borrowing/lending requests, and related scanning. Gathers data and analyzes usage of library online services to identify various patterns of usage/non-usage. Using a variety of techniques, obtains feedback from clients and others to assist the library in modifying its services to provide more effective assistance
  • Utilize a working knowledge of library systems technology, databases, software as well as operating policies and procedures. Provide support for special projects and participate in vendor demonstrations and review to identify potential new products and services. Supports library acquisitions by assisting with the development of contract documentation, technical reviews, and annual management of awards
  • Analyzes library operating practices and procedures, online files, and processing methods to improve the operating effectiveness and efficiency of the library, the management of information and to develop techniques for making quality assurance inspections. Using a variety of techniques, obtains feedback from clients and others to assist the library in modifying its services to provide more effective assistance to a wide range of science professionals.
  • Use library systems to support and perform ILL and document delivery tasks such as processing borrowing/lending requests, and related scanning. Gathers data and analyzes usage of library online services to identify various patterns of usage/non-usage. Using a variety of techniques, obtains feedback from clients and others to assist the library in modifying its services to provide more effective assistance. Provide access to information resources responding to personal, phone and email inquiries that may require analysis of policies, methods and conclusions and the inclusion of appropriate materials.
  • Supports the library digitization program by tracking equipment upgrades and maintenance contracts, creating and tracking logs, filling scan requests, and maintaining workflow documentation and standard operating procedures files.
  • Participate in the development, design and implementation of training and outreach programs for internal and external resources and policies.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Librarian, all grade levels.

A. Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree; OR

B. A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.

GS- 09:
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement as described above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:

Possess one year of experience at the GS-7 level or equivalent assisting with the coordination and technical oversight of library functions needed to organize and maintain collections and deliver scientific materials and information services, 2) Creating and maintaining content on subject focused research guides and help aids using library technologies and standards; and 3) Utilizing subject knowledge of scientific research library collections and resources to respond to patron questions and assist with training and outreach.

**OR Successfully completed at least 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or master`s in library science or equivalent graduate degree, e.g., LL.B. or J.D., related to the position

**OR Possess a combination of graduate level education as described above, beyond the first year of progressive graduate study, and appropriate professional experience that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.

GS-11:
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement as described above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:

Possess one year of experience at the GS-9 level or equivalent providing coordination and technical oversight of multiple research library functions needed to organize and maintain collections and deliver scientific materials and information services, 2) Providing research and reference support in an earth, natural sciences, or biology research and science library setting; utilizing subject knowledge of scientific library collections, terminologies, and concepts to answer complex questions and identify resources to support research needs; 3) Providing research literature search services, training and outreach to scientists and professionals in a science library setting.

**OR Possess 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education in library science or doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) related to the position.

**OR Possess a combination of graduate level education as described in above, beyond the first two years of progressive graduate study, and appropriate professional experience that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.
