Duties

Help
  • Participates as a team member with the scientist in all phases of the research process and assumes full technical and operational responsibility for specific phases of the research. Provides input into the initial planning of experiments.
  • Independently develops or designs various aspects of research projects on the basis of overall objectives outlined by the supervisor.
  • Contributes to the planning of various steps in experiment or project and to interpretation and documentation of findings.
  • Selects appropriate methods and procedures for carrying the project plan to completion.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of highly specialized complex equipment which must be calibrated and synchronized to achieve desired results.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The qualification requirements for this position at the GS-09 grade level includes one-year specialized experience at the GS-08 grade level, or its non-Federal equivalent, participating in research experiments related to the genetic engineering of crops; molecularly analyzing engineered plants; collecting or analyzing plant and crop samples; and operating sophisticated scientific laboratory equipment.
OR
Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include
Plant Physiology, Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology, Plant Biotechnology, Biological Sciences, Crop Genetics & Breeding, or Plant pathology.

OR

A qualifying combination of graduate education and experience as described above.

In the Research, Education, and Economics (REE) Mission Area and at ARS, our employees' safety and health are paramount. Applications will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures and USDA policy using category rating. Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of two or three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. Category placement will be determined based on applicants' quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:
