Duties

Help
  • Develop novel cropping systems based upon sound integrated weed management and weed ecology principles that may include winter cover crops, reduced tillage, and rotations.
  • Develop and advance weed control options for the northern Corn Belt and elsewhere that maximize benefits and minimize risks to agriculture and the environment.
  • Generate accurate information on weed behavior.
  • Design and test novel systems of weed management.
  • Identify and develop new economically desirable crops, new/alternative crop products, and new cropping practices for the north central USA, or broader application.
  • Develop models that identify and/or predict crop- weed-microclimate (including soil ecosystem) interactions that elucidate optimal management practices that confer agricultural system resiliency.
  • Conduct individual and collaborative team research at multiple scales.
  • Collaborate with Unit and other ARS, university, and private sector scientists to achieve objectives.
  • Supervise technical support.
  • Operate/maintain a laboratory and plot to field-scale experiments to fulfill objectives.
  • Analyze, interpret, and disseminate findings in scientific peer-reviewed journal articles, presentations, and reports.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Minimum qualification requirements are found in the OPM Qualification Standards Operating Manual for General Schedule Positions.

Basic Qualification Requirements for Agronomy Series, 0471:
A. Degree: agronomy; or related discipline of science that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in the basic plant sciences, including at least 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, such as those dealing with plant breeding, crop production, and soil and crop management.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience: at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, including a minimum of 15 semester hours in agronomic subjects, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Graduate Education: Agronomy, or one of the related disciplines or fields of science, such as plant physiology, soils, or genetics, where the curriculum or pattern of training placed major emphasis on field crops or agronomy. Graduate study in related fields, such as botany, plant pathology, and biochemistry may also be qualifying, provided it placed a sufficient amount of emphasis on agronomy.

Evaluation of Education: Course work in such subjects as botany, plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant breeding or genetics, plant ecology, plant pathology, microbiology, agronomy, or those dealing with basic soil-water-plant relationships of an agronomic or ecologic nature may be used to meet the 30-semester-hour requirement in the basic plant sciences. Agronomy courses include agronomy, field crops, field crop production or management, soil and crop management, plant breeding and development, weed control, and similar courses, including those in soils, biochemistry, plant physiology, etc., provided they dealt with principles, methods, or procedures that are applied directly in agronomic work and in the solving of agronomic problems.

Additional Requirements:
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

GS-12: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the duties of the position (i.e., agronomy, weed
science, plant biology, plant physiology, crop science, or weed ecology) OR 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal Service OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience.

GS-13: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal
Service.

GS-14: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal
Service.

GS-15: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level in the Federal
Service.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised.

The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-12 level are:

- Conducting research related to management of weeds in crops; AND
- Utilizing crop, soil, or micrometeorological modeling tools; AND
- Publishing research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals related to weed science.

The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-13 level are:

- Planning and conducting independent and collaborative research related to management of weeds in crops; AND
- Developing models that identify and/or predict crop- weed-microclimate interactions; AND
- Publishing independent research results, as a senior author, in peer-reviewed journals related to weed science.

The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-14 level are:

- Planning and conducting independent research related to management of weeds in crops; AND
- Developing models that identify and/or predict crop- weed-microclimate interactions; AND
- Publishing related research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals; AND
- Invitations (virtually or in-person) to present research findings at scientific conferences or selected to serve on
important committees review panels of technical, groups or professional organizations; AND
- Experience supervising staff to accomplish a variety of research objectives; AND
- Working with stakeholders to enhance research efforts and writing grant proposals to expand existing programs.

The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-15 level are:

- Leading research that contributed to improved management of weeds in crops; AND
- Developing models that identify and/or predict crop- weed-microclimate interactions; AND
- Publishing related research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals; AND
- Demonstrated stature within the scientific community (Technical consulting, Society board member, Journal Associate Editor, Society
program committee chair etc.); AND
- Experience writing grant proposals to expand existing programs; AND
- Developing and maintaining relationships with stakeholders to enhance research efforts; AND
- Experience supervising staff to accomplish a variety of research objectives.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Additional information

This position requires the selectee to undergo a pre-employment check and a full background investigation. Any offer made is considered a tentative job offer pending the outcome of the pre-employment check. Retention in the position is based upon a favorable adjudication of the background investigation. The incumbent will be subject to periodic reinvestigations.
