Interns in this position may work either full or part-time, and work schedules are flexible around the student's academic schedule. Student interns accrue vacation and sick-leave and are eligible for retirement benefits and health, life, dental, and vision insurance. Upon successful completion of the internship program, you may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to a full-time permanent position.

As a Multimedia Communications Intern with the OIG, you will:

  • Support the OIG's mission while enhancing your expertise in digital storytelling.
  • Work with the Office of Communications staff to brainstorm, pitch, strategize and create photos, videos, podcasts, interactive web content, and other digital media.
  • Photograph people, events, and landscapes in a variety of styles, including artistic and documentary.
  • Video and audio record live events, interviews, and b-roll in a variety of styles, including artistic and documentary.
  • Use Adobe Creative Suite and other software (e.g. ARCGIS Online, Power BI, Tableau) to produce compelling and high-quality digital media materials for public consumption.
  • Support the Office of Communications by assisting with various other assignment.
  • Create, modify and adapt materials to align with the DOJ OIG brand system and style guide.
  • Explain project requirements and answers questions concerning specifications and accepted standards.
  • Examine finished projects to ensure uniformity and consistency with specifications and standards. May execute any or all artwork using various mediums.

  • Interns must work a minimum of 20 hours a week during the school year and may work full time when school is not in session.
  • If selected you must complete and sign a Pathways Participant Agreement and will be required to provide the OIG Pathways Program Officer with a copy of your transcript verifying continuous enrollment, GPA and grade requirements each semester.
  • You must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better for the duration of this internship (failure to meet this requirement will result in immediate termination).

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a Technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, at a qualifying educational institution on a half-time or full-time basis.
  • Must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA (grade point average) of 3.0 or better (must provide a transcript and proof of enrollment/acceptance letter); these standards will be in effect for the duration of the internship.
  • Must maintain enrollment/continue education throughout the duration of employment under the Pathways Program.
Minimum Qualifications: In addition to meeting the Basic Qualifications stated above, you must also meet the minimum qualifications for the appropriate grade level, or specialized experience, or a combination of both..

To qualify for the GS-05 level, you must have completed 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.

To qualify for the GS-07 level, you must have completed 1 full academic year of graduate level education, or meet one of the following:
  1. Have a bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement (defined below) in film and media production, journalism, public affairs, digital storytelling, communication, photography, or other fields related to the position; OR
  2. Have a bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement (defined below) that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the related fields identified above, and required the use of interactive data visualization tools such as Adobe Creative Suite
Superior Academic Achievement is defined as: a) Class Standing - upper third of the graduating class based on completed courses in the college, university, or major subdivision; b) Grade Point Average - 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript or as computed based on 4 years of education or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of curriculum; OR 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in your major field or the required courses in your major field completed during the final 2 years of your curriculum. If more than 10 percent of total undergraduate credit hours are non-graded, i.e. pass/fail, CLEP, CCAF, DANTES, military credit, etc., you cannot qualify based on GPA; c) Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society (note: freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this position). (If qualifying based on class standing or honor society membership, provide appropriate documentation)

A portfolio with examples of your work must be submitted for review by our panel of subject matter experts.

Eligibility for Conversion to Competitive Service Following Graduation:
To be eligible for conversion to the competitive service after completion of the program, an intern must:

  • successfully complete an academic course of study as evidenced by a qualifying degree;
  • complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience under the Pathways Program;
  • meet the OPM qualification standards for the position to which the intern is being converted;
  • maintain acceptable performance under the Agency's approved performance management system;
  • receive a favorable recommendation for conversion from supervisor.
  • Note: conversion is not guaranteed upon graduation
