Help

As a Student Trainee (Mathematical Sciences), you will work with higher graded staff in support of office programs and activities to gain practical work experience that augments training in an academic course of study.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Works for the OIG's Office of Data Analytics on studies that involve the full range of methods, procedures, techniques, and activities routinely carried out in the operations research area,
  • Assists in planning and carries out clearly defined portions of an overall operations research study or project under the guidance of a senior Office of Data Analytics team member,
  • Applies general theories, concepts, and principles to operations research study or project; with assistance, exercises judgment in adapting established procedures,
  • Reviews relevant research literature to help identify the areas helpful for the development or assisting in the development of proper methodology,
  • Performs work to exacting but clearly stated standards,
  • Assembles data in both tabular, and narrative form, noting inconsistencies or areas where data appears inconclusive,
  • In collaboration with colleagues and supervisor plans projects such as the evaluation of user or customer acceptance of new information-based products and services,
  • Prepares preliminary reports as instructed and according to established procedures,
  • Describes the methods and procedures used and includes summaries of data obtained and descriptions of any problems or unusual situations encountered in carrying out the studies,
  • Contributes to complete and accurate written reports for review by the supervisor.

  • You must meet half-time student enrollment requirements.
  • You must be at least 16 years of age.

  • You must complete and sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.
  • You must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better for the duration of this internship.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a Technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, at a qualifying educational institution on a half-time or full-time basis.
  • Must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA (grade point average) of 3.0 or better (must provide a transcript and proof of enrollment/acceptance letter); these standards will be in effect for the duration of the internship.
  • Must maintain enrollment/continue education throughout the duration of employment under the Pathways Program.

To qualify for the GS-5 level, you must have at least, you must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience; or have completed four (4) academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree; or a combination of both specialized experience and education.

To be eligible for conversion to the competitive service after completion of the program, an intern must:
  • successfully complete an academic course of study as evidenced by a qualifying degree;
  • complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience under the Pathways Program;
  • meet the OPM qualification standards for the position to which the intern is being converted;
  • maintain acceptable performance under the Agency's approved performance management system; and receive a favorable recommendation for conversion from supervisor.
  • the anticipated position for conversion would be into the following occupations: GS-1515/1529/1530 Interdisciplinary, and may require the individual to meet an Individual Occupational Requirement for the particular series. The anticipated position may change based on the needs of the organization.
