Duties

Help

As a Library Technician, you will:

  • Provide acquisition services related to the purchase of library books and subscriptions (print and electronic) for a law library supporting a large and varied clientele of tax attorneys and specialists, paralegals, economists etc;
  • Maintain spreadsheets, files, and documentation related to the library budget, acquisition tracking, and acquisition package;
  • Receive incoming mail and library publications which includes logging receipt into the library catalog;
  • Provide circulation services and perform tasks related to providing interlibrary loan (ILL) services to library users and to other libraries requesting loans; and
  • Conduct market research and correspond with vendors to request price quotations and other relevant documentation.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

To qualify for this position of Library Technician you must meet the qualification requirements listed below by the closing of this announcement:

For GS-08:

Specialized Experience: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as: 1) Ordering different types of library materials in accordance with acquisition and purchase card regulations and related record-keeping requirements; 2) Experience with one or more integrated library systems in order to perform copy cataloging; 3) Performing collection processing duties (e.g. opening mail and following procedures for newly received library materials) and maintenance duties such as shelving, shifting, weeding; 4) Performing circulation and interlibrary loan related tasks to provide customer service to library users.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week, on your resume.

Rating: Your application will be evaluated in the following areas: Contracting/Procurement, Customer Service, Database Management Systems, Oral and Written Communication, and Technology Application. Category rating will be used to rank and select eligible candidates. If qualified, you will be assigned to one of three quality level categories, Category A, Category B or Category Cdepending on your responses to the online questions, regarding your experience, education, and training related to this position.
