Duties

  • Duties described are at the minimum target grade for this announcement, GS-05:
  • Provides technical support to the heritage resources staff.
  • Conducts inventories of cultural resources in areas of proposed Forest Service projects.
  • Performs on-the-ground area surveys for surface and subsurface evidence of historic and prehistoric archeological remains.
  • Performs a variety of computations and assessments of standard archeological data.
  • Transfers GPS data to a GIS Arc View program loaded in a computer to create a map.

Qualifications

You must meet the ANILCA eligibility requirements to be referred for this position.

Eligibility Requirements: You must have lived and or worked in or near the geographic boundaries of the Chugach National Forest or Tongass National Forest and have special knowledge or expertise concerning the natural and cultural resources in Southcentral or Southeast, Alaska area to participate in archeological technician activities.

Additional information

The salary amount will be adjusted to include a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). A gradually reducing COLA will continue to be paid after December 31, 2012. COLA will not be eliminated until 65% of the locality pay equals the frozen COLA rate. See the OPM website at: http://www.opm.gov/oca/cola/index.asp for additional information.

Positions may be filled at one or more of the duty locations included in this announcement. Positions filled will be full-time; or full-time seasonal with either 13 pay periods of guaranteed pay status and 13 pay periods of non-pay time or 18 pay periods of guaranteed pay status and 8 pay periods of non-pay time.

These are bargaining unit positions and are represented by NFFE.

If you are selected for a position with further promotion potential, you will be placed under a career development plan, and may be non-competitively promoted if you successfully complete the requirements and if recommended by management. However, promotion is not guaranteed

This position is not eligible for telework.

Upon completion of 2 years the incumbent will be non-competitively converted to a career or career-conditional appointment if all of the following are met: successful completion of 2 year probationary period, Office of Personnel Management (OPM) qualification requirements are met for the position the incumbent is converting into, satisfactorily meeting performance requirements, and completion of all prescribed training. If all requirements are not met upon completion of two years in this position, employment will be terminated.
