Help

As a Research Ecologist/Wildlife Biologist (Unit Leader) within the North Carolina Cooperative Research Unit, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Responsibilities of the Unit Leader will require substantive administrative and managerial oversight.
  • Plans, conducts, and directs research related to fish, wildlife, or ecological resources, with application to contemporary science, policy and management needs.
  • Conducts research that is cooperator driven and provides scientific basis for management and policy decisions.
  • Serves as subject matter expert in fish and wildlife ecology, providing leadership and guidance to government and private agencies and university representatives through participation in meetings, conferences and work groups.
  • Disseminate research results via final reports, peer-reviewed print scientific journals, online scientific journals, books, book chapters or other outlets. Make presentations on findings to scientific and conservation organizations.
  • Serves as graduate faculty member, contributing to both the research, graduate student mentorship, and teaching mission of the university.
  • The selectee will be required to obtain a graduate faculty appointment at North Carolina State University.
  • Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver.
Desired candidates will have:
  1. Demonstrated ability to build an applied, field-based research program focused on ecological patterns and processes at local to regional scales, relevant to conservation, management, and restoration of wildlife populations and habitats.
  2. Ability to develop innovative approaches to address current and future conditions to inform decisions on conservation and management of wildlife and ecosystems.
  3. Demonstrated expertise in the application of modern quantitative analyses and tools for spatial analysis, species interactions, population dynamics, or habitat dynamics.
  4. Demonstrated effectiveness communicating scientific information to a diverse audience of managers, policy makers, graduate students, and the public.
  5. Demonstrated ability to manage a complex research program to meet the needs of wildlife conservation agencies locally, nationally, and internationally through engagement with a diverse group of stakeholders.
  6. Ability to attract, teach, and mentor post-graduate students from diverse backgrounds in wildlife conservation.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

Basic Education for Ecologist, GS-0408: Applicants must meet the following to satisfy the basic education requirement for Ecologist, all grade levels.

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours or the equivalent in ecology, and 12 semester hours or the equivalent in physical and mathematical sciences.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST, GS-0486: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Wildlife Biologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biological science that included:

  • at least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research course in the field of wildlife biology; and
  • at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and
  • at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences. ** OR

B. Combination of education and experience-equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent), with at least 9 semester hours or the equivalent in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours or the equivalent in zoology, and 9 semester hours or the equivalent in botany or related plant science, as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

Ph.D Requirement: In addition to meeting the basic education requirements described above, in order to receive consideration for this position, you must also possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in wildlife science or a closely related field of study appropriate for this position.

To verify the Ph.D requirement, transcripts or verification from the university registrar must be submitted that clearly state: Ph.D awarded, major, and date of conferral. Failure to provide this information will result in your application receiving no further consideration.

For GS-13:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience at the GS-12 level may include: serving as an independent researcher conceiving, formulating, and conducting research relevant towildlife resources, with application to contemporary science, policy and management needs; conducting research or significantly contributing to a research team; preparing descriptive and interpretative scientific reports on the results of research activities for publication and administrative use; authoring or co-author publications, scientific journal articles, and/or other products of considerable importance to the research situation; attending scientific and interagency meetings to present personal research results and exchange information within the scientific community; reviewing manuscripts and proposals of other scientists; and working with other scientists on technical issues related to the research assignment.

For GS-14:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in wildlife biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service.

Examples of GS-13 level work may include: 1) Providing technical leadership, staff level coordination or consultation for a major wildlife program; resolving problems that are resistant to established practices; 2) Serving as an expert agency consultant with international, national, and State officials; 3) Conducting field investigations based on newly identified wildlife program areas; planning/executing assignments, selecting appropriate techniques, determining project scope/approach.

For GS-15:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in wildlife biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service.

Examples of GS-14 level work may include: 1) Developing and coordinating major wildlife biology research projects that may impact regional scientific objectives; 2) developing or directly influencing the scientific, administrative and technical policies, standards, procedures, and instructions necessary for the effective direction and operation of a wildlife program; 3) resolving critical problems resulting from the unprecedented complexities of a scientific wildlife study; 4) serving as the principal contact with other Federal agencies, state and local government organizations, and other groups that may affect the success of a major scientific program. The work involved advising or counseling other recognized senior technical experts.

You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.

Education

  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
  • Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the above requirements.
