Summary

There are eight positions on the Huron-Manistee National Forest - two at each of the following duty locations:

  • Baldwin, MI
  • Mio, MI
  • Oscoda, MI
  • Wellston, MI.
These positions schedule, organize, and execute wildlife field projects for the purpose of identifying and evaluating habitat management.

Duties

Help
  • Duties at the GS-5 level:
  • Collect wildlife data for inclusion in wildlife reports.
  • Perform habitat sampling and analyze samples.
  • Recognize and assess condition of environment and wildlife inhabitants.
  • Complete habitat improvement project work such as watershed development, fencing, or clearing.
  • Work collaboratively as a team member or team leader to perform wildlife-related assignments using established methods.
  • Communicate routine information clearly in written form.
  • Duties at the full performance GS-6 level:
  • Collect, compile and summarize data on wildlife habitat and vegetation for inclusion in wildlife plans.
  • Survey and collect data on big game, upland game, raptors, small mammals, and threatened and endangered species.
  • Capture and identify data in accordance with protocols.
  • Schedule, organize, and execute field wildlife projects for identifying and evaluating habitat management.
  • Use prescribed procedures to assess and resolve regular and recurring problems concerning wildlife project plans for habitat management.
  • Communicate applicable instructions to team members.
  • Make presentations of wildlife management findings.
  • Respond to inquiries from co-workers and team members.
  • Develop accurate records and analysis of findings from field tests.
  • Communicate test results and routine and non-routine information clearly in written form.
  • Duties listed below are at the GS-6 level.
  • Collect, compile and summarize data on wildlife habitat and vegetation for inclusion in wildlife reports.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-05: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include one or more of the following: Participated in basic procedural wildlife-related assignments where methods and techniques are well established, such as identifying, measuring, and recording plant/animal species; Plotted and identifed habitat types and conditions on maps and reports in accordance with pre-determined requirements; Assisted in the collection, handling, and preservation of wildlife habitat specimens; Under supervision, prepared data summaries obtained from field collections using prescribed statistical procedures.

OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) from an accredited college or university with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics and at least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position to be filled.

OR a combination of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience as described above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Additional information

These positions require negotiating rough and uneven terrain on foot in all weather conditions.

These positions involve habitat improvement work which requires arduous physical labor.

This position may be eligible to telework up to four days per week, based upon the duties of the position. This position may also be eligible for flexible work arrangements as determined by agency policy and any applicable collective bargaining agreements.
