Duties

Help

The National Wildlife Refuge System is the public lands system managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and conserves, manages, and restores more than 560 national wildlife refuges and 38 wetland management districts. The Branch of Communications and Digital Services is within the Division of Visitor Services and Communication and is responsible for national-level management of the Refuge System's recreation and public engagement programs aimed at welcoming and orienting virtual and in-person visitors, managing priority public uses and recreation, delivering engaging interpretive and outreach products, supporting Friends and volunteers, and managing cultural resources.

The Branch of Communications and Digital Services is responsible for improving the public's experience with the National Wildlife Refuge System by deploying a strategic interpretive/communications plan across digital and in-person channels. Functions include campaign planning, writing, editing, graphic design and layout, managing national web content, social media, video and photo production, and producing e-newsletters, brochures, and special events.

This position works as part of an integrated communications team that works collectively to increase public engagement with the National Wildlife Refuge System.

As a Writer-Editor your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Serves as an expert writer and editorial consultant/resource to National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS) staff. Coordinates communications with appropriate Service or Department staff and identifies seeks solutions to problems that may arise.
  • Constructs clearly composed, factual, and engaging written products from research, interviews, studies and contact with Service, Department, and other government officials.
  • Researches, develops, writes, and edits documents, web content, social media posts, and articles to provide a fuller understanding of specific aspects of programs, policies, functions, activities, operations and related topics.
  • Responsible for the layout concept of web content using computer applications and computer-generated graphics. Uses available software packages for innovative designs on multimedia content.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess the Minimum Qualification described below:

Minimum Qualification [GS-12]
One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include; independently researching and verifying factual information to write or edit engaging social media or web content, such as reports, manuals, articles, scripts, etc.; writing internal newsletters for employees and report to headquarters consolidating submissions from various components; obtaining clearances from appropriate program office prior to publication; developing and presenting factual information to intended audience.

Minimum Qualification [GS-13]
One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include: developing, writing and editing materials for communications and outreach; developing or reviewing publications, manuals, special reports, pamphlets, and briefing materials; providing guidance in interpreting and applying guidelines and criteria for the preparation of various reports and documents; building, managing and updating internet pages, and intranet pages; preparing graphic design for a variety of products, web sites, and applications; preparing talking points or speeches for organizational leaders.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Location Negotiable: The salary will be based upon duty station and locality pay once selected.PLEASE NOTE: If selected, you may be placed at a regional office, field office, current duty station, or other DOI owned or leased worksite, at the discretion of management. Additional questions regarding placement should be reserved for the interview process.

PCS INFORMATION: Yes, entitlements for payment of basic moving expenses, as required and to the extent allowed by the Federal Travel Regulation (FTR) 302-3.101, are authorized for eligible applicants changing duty station when the change meets the distance tests as provided in FTR 302-1.1 and 302-2.6. All moving expenses are taxable. --In addition, relocation discretionary entitlements MAY be authorized for this position including contractor-provided home sale.

Telework: This position is suitable for telework and may be allowed to telework with supervisory approval.
