Duties

Help
  • Determines survey requirements, topographic mapping, boundary work, and inventories.
  • Researches historical district records, selects known survey reference points and determines the precise location of important features in the survey areas surface.
  • Assesses a variety of unusual circumstances involving measuring distances, directions, and angles between points and point elevation, lines, and contours on, above, and below the earth.
  • Analyzes and interprets difficult requests to determine types of surveys required and location of request.
  • Develops scopes of work that include areas to be surveyed, exhibits, access, points of contact, available control, procedures, utility requirements, and safety.
  • Plans project requirements with requesting organizations to include the development of technical approach, cost estimates, initiation and completion schedule, analysis and interpretation of requirements for products to be delivered.
  • Uses a variety of data sources for surveying, mapping, CADD and GIS including GPS, photogrammetry, digital aerial photography, Lidar data, soft and hard copy mapping, GIS implementation, relational databases, satellite imagery, and published reports.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify at the GS-7 grade level, you must have:
A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in conducting field surveys such as geodetic, topographic and hydrographic; coordinating the requirements for surveying such as mapping, CADD and GIS such as GPS; and utilizing a computer and computer applications for processing GPS survey data. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service; OR
B. Education: Completion of one full academic year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surveying technology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.); OR
C. Combination of Education & Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for this position. Determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determine your education as a percentage of the education required for the grade the grade level; then add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal 100 percent to qualify for this position. (To compute the percentage, divide you total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify).

To qualify at the GS-8 grade level, you must have:
A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting field surveys such as geodetic, topographic and hydrographic; applying the application of CADD and GIS technology in the preparation of deliverables; and utilizing computers and computer applications to download and process survey data. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service; OR
B. Education: Completion of one and a half years (i.e., 27 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surveying technology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.); OR
C. Combination of Education & Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for this position. Determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determine your education as a percentage of the education required for the grade the grade level; then add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal 100 percent to qualify for this position. (To compute the percentage, divide you total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify).

To qualify at the GS-9 grade level, you must have:
A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes collecting field LiDAR data utilizing Terrestrial LiDAR Units; processing of Terrestrial LiDAR data sets; performing surveys in accordance with laws and regulations; planning, scheduling, and directing various stages of a survey; processing survey data inside Bentley Microstation environment including terrain modeling and map preparation. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service; OR
B. Education: Completion of two full years of graduate education; or a master's degree; or equivalent degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as surveying technology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.); OR
C. Combination of Education & Experience:
Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for this position. Determine your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determine your education as a percentage of the education required for the grade the grade level; then add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal 100 percent to qualify for this position. (To compute the percentage, divide you total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify).

To qualify at the GS-10 grade level, you must have:
A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting certified field boundary surveys and field surveys utilizing Terrestrial LiDAR Units; conducting site visits to determine scope of project; and collecting and analyzing survey data for adequacy based on scope of project. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service.
B. Education: Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. At this grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Education

To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, you must have:
A. Specialized Experience:
One year of specialized experience which includes conducting field surveys utilizing Terrestrial LiDAR Units; conducting site visits to determine scope of project; developing and maintaining standard operating procedures; and serving as liaison between customers and projects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service.
B. Education: Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. At this grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent.
