Duties

Help
  • Review recommendations and data input from Field Offices on ecological issues. May also provide guidance and quality control of projects and products of less senior specialists.
  • Perform on-the-ground investigations of complex ecological and botanical conditions in support of botanical and other resource projects.
  • Participate in interagency wildlife and habitat management, inventory, and monitoring projects. Formulate strategies to recover, mitigate, or monitor impacts.
  • Serve on interdisciplinary teams to write and review aquatic biological input to Environmental Assessments, Environmental Impact Statements, Section 7 Biological Assessments, and development of protective stipulations and Resource Management Plans.
  • Carry out inventory and monitoring of subsistence wildlife populations and habitat conditions and monitoring of non-game wildlife habitat and conditions.

Qualifications

In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Experience with multiple-use management in areas such as forestry, wildlife, recreation management, and geology, among others. Working knowledge of biological components such as plant and animal communities, wildlife habitat conditions, riparian and aquatic resources, and physical components such as water quality, soil erosion, and climate. Experience analyzing the effects of land use authorizations on biological ecosystem components such as biodiversity, ecological succession, vegetation conditions, animal and plant population dynamics, plant growth requirements, and sensitive, threatened, or endangered species habitat. Experience examining the relationship between biotic and abiotic components such as water, nutrient and energy cycles, soil erosion, water quality, and geology. Experience using geographic information systems (GIS) to support analyses and providing input into the Field Office, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process based on these analyses. Experience with plant identification or the ability to learn basic taxonomy and field identification of common plants.

Education: at least three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in ecology, biological sciences, natural resource management, or physical or mathematical sciences which is directly related to the work of this position and demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate doctoral level education. Doctoral level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Field work involvesstrenuous hiking or climbing through heavily wooded, steep, rough terrain and lifting up to 40 pounds, camping and/or living in remote and primitive conditions, to include sleeping in a tent and preparing your own food, while doing fieldwork for up to 6 days per month.

Work Environment: Field work is completed in variable topography (flat, steep, rocky, etc.) and weather extremes (hot, cold, wind, precipitation, etc.). You will be required to carry a firearm or bear spray for protection from bears and other dangerous animals.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have a degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.
