Summary

The Deputy Director will participate and fully share leadership for managing the Institute with the Institute Director. They will lead the institute in establishing programmatic goals, responsible for planning, developing, evaluating, and managing occupational safety and health public health research programs. This position serves as Acting National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Director in the absence of the Director.
Major Duties:
Responsible for planning, developing, evaluating, and managing occupational safety and health public health research programs.
Liaises and partners with top officials of other Federal, State, and local government organizations, and/or public and private stakeholders, advancing the organization's research goals and programs.
Develops goals and objectives that integrate the organization's mission and programs with occupational and public health objectives necessary to successfully achieve mission and implement quality improvements as needed.
Provides leadership and overall direction and vision to the subordinate organization/unit leaders on a wide range of occupational and public health and administrative issues.
Disseminates the results of occupational safety and health research and translates completed occupational safety and health research to practice.
Represents the Director on various committees and scientific matters with full authority to speak and act on behalf of the organization.
Identifies problems and opportunities for improvement, and determines or recommends appropriate actions or interpretation of issues that impact the Institute's occupational safety and health goals and programs.
Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (external link), a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.
Graduate Training:
Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below.
An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) (external link).
A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (external link), (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) (external link).
A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.
Additional Requirements: 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training.
Candidates must show clear evidence of specialized experience.
Specialized experience is that which is directly related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, such as applying ethical principles and standards in the administration, research and promotion of occupational and public health science and innovation; and experience working with a broad range of stakeholders, policy, and decision makers.
Typically, experience of this nature is gained at or above the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

The executive level compensation package is commensurate with qualifications and experience and may result in a higher salary than reflected above.
