Summary
This position is located within the USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics and Physiology Research Unit, in Baton Rouge, LA.
In this position, you will participate in the research process by performing a wide range of technical duties related to honey bee colony establishment and their maintenance. You will perform sample collection and data recording with respect to colony health and population metrics.
Assists with the testing and breeding for honey bee resistant traits and genetics.
Maintains, calibrates, and modifies equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.
Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies bee samples and supporting records.
Maintains inventory of chemicals and safely disposes of waste material (both chemical and biological) in the lab.
Assists in one or more phases of the research process related to bees by performing a variety of technical duties in a field environment.
Assists other scientists and technicians with tasks in the laboratory such as: sample processing, insect dissection, behavioral- and bio-assays, or standard molecular techniques.

Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

Qualifications

GS-5 Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for the GS-5 position includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-4 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with collecting or evaluating insect samples in a field environment; recording or analyzing scientific data; and operating standard scientific equipment. OR Education: A full 4-year course of study above the high school level leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position being filled. Related courses may include Ecology, Entomology, Animal Behavior, Agriculture, or Forestry. OR
A combination of experience and education as described above.
