Duties

Help
  • Responsible for developing/conducting the training program for the Fort Polk Fire Department which includes the training of fire fighting personnel in a full range of fire protection and prevention techniques.
  • Develops, writes and updates the training program for the Fort Polk Fire Department.
  • Instructs fire department personnel in all phases of fire protection and prevention techniques and practices and gives tests as required to determine the level of knowledge possessed by the personnel and the amount of training needed.
  • Perform normal fire fighting duties.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Requires 120 hours of work per two (2) week period, consisting of four (4) 9 hour work days and with one (1) 24 hour work shift each week.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a two year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position has a heavy lifting requirement which may require you to lift up to 45 pounds.
  • Incumbent must be fully qualified to operate a government vehicle. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver?s license.
  • Incumbent is required to participate in cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • National Registry Emergency Medical Technician and Fire Instructor III certification is required within one year (365 days) of entrance on duty date.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents; and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. The OPM Qualification Standard provides the following examples: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents; and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

In addition to the above requirement, this position also requires the below certifications:

  • Fire Officer II
  • Fire Instructor II
  • Fire Inspector II
  • Airport Firefighter
  • Hazmat Incident Commander
  • National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) and Fire Instructor III certification is not required for initial hire. Upon employment date, the employee is required to successfully complete Fire Instructor III and NREMT certification requirements within one year (365 days). Failure to successfully complete these certifications is a condition of employment and may result in termination of employment.

*These certifications must have been awarded by the DoD, IFSAC, or Pro-Board accredited training to meet the requirement.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-08).
