Duties

Help

The mission of the Police Officer is to serve and protect Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, visitors, and others who frequent VA facilities.

  • Protects property and persons on VA property, and enforces appropriate criminal codes and regulations.
  • Assists patients, visitors and employees who require direction and/or physical assistance.
  • Issues traffic citations and federal violation notices when necessary.
  • Responds to crowd and riot control, bomb threats and search requests.
  • Questions witnesses and principals in crimes reported on VA property.
  • Arrests persons for offenses committed on VA property and transfers them to appropriate authorities for detention.
  • Frequently works and patrols alone and without supervision in the outlying grounds and parking lots areas.
  • Directs and assists persons to safety areas during fire, storm or other emergencies and takes prompt action to evacuate persons from dangerous areas.
  • Identifies and reports hazardous situations and correct immediate dangers.
  • Facilitates the movement of vehicles and people; extends information, direction and courtesy to visitors, employees, and patients.
  • Consistently communicate and treat customers (Veterans, visitors and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful and respectful manner.
  • Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
  • Conducts foot patrol and/or vehicle patrol for a prescribed patrol area over the course of a regular tour of duty.
  • Writes uniform offense reports covering incidents on his/her tour of duty containing pertinent information which is factual, classified properly, and submit such reports in a timely manner.
Work Schedule: Rotating 12 hour shifts 6:00am - 6:00pm and 6:00pm - 6:00am; Days, Nights, Weekends and Holidays

  • Officers are required to carry agency-approved firearms while on duty on VA property. Officers must achieve and maintain qualification with the agency-approved firearms.
  • Officers must also successfully complete physical and psychological examinations prior to entering on duty and annually thereafter.

Qualifications

You may qualify based on your experience as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: GS 06 You must have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: work that has been performed independently, under general supervision, and included regularly pursuing and/or apprehending persons fleeing a crime scene or attempting to resist arrest, responding to calls or alarms involving crimes, issuing citations, actually subduing individuals causing disturbances, arresting violators based on eyewitness accounts, performing control desk duties, taking charge of a crime or accident scene, seizing and preserving evidence, conducting long- and short-range investigations, and completing investigation reports.
  • Specialized Experience: GS 05 One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-4 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. At this level, police work must have included patrolling assigned area(s) to enforce laws and ordinances, regulate traffic, control crowds, prevent crimes and/or arrest violators. Experience as a security guard or corrections officer is generally NOT qualifying. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week.

Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.

An individual who is convicted of a domestic violence charge cannot be authorized to own, be issued, purchase, or otherwise have possession of a handgun under the Lautenberg Amendment (PL 104-208) to the Gun Control Act of 1968 (18 USC 922).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature.
