Help

As the Archivist, you will:

  • Perform a range of core preservation, arrangement, descriptive, and metadata tasks to ensure the long-term viability of archival collections and to make the materials discoverable to internal and external researchers.
  • Assist with appraising, surveying, and transferring analog and born-digital records from Gallery offices to the possession of Gallery Archives using established records disposition schedules and tools.
  • Provide reference services for internal and external persons seeking historical or other museum information, following Archives policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for ordering and maintaining office and special archival supplies; serves as department’s purchase card holder; maintains department’s extensive subject and research files, and other support activities as assigned.

Physical Demands.  Work is primarily sedentary; however, a substantial amount of walking, climbing ladders and stairs, and lifting (weighing up to 50 pounds) is required.  Archival work areas are located in different parts of the Gallery complex.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the NF-1420-9. A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is at least one year of experience (combined), equivalent in responsibility to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service, supporting an archival program for a major organization or institution through various collection preservation, description, and discovery activities.

Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates.

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of archival theory and best practices and their practical application in an archival repository. 
  2. Excellent understanding of all aspects of archival preservation including storage requirements and physical qualities of records in all physical forms, including paper, mylar, film, audio tape, video tape and digital media.
  3. Solid knowledge of the characteristics and needs of digital objects for their appraisal, description, preservation, and access in archives.
  4. Experience with archival collection management systems, relational databases, and information structures.
  5. Experience with digital asset management systems and digital preservation management systems; knowledge of metadata standards for digitized and born-digital materials

Education

Basic Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Evaluation of Experience:

Professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may be accepted as meeting the professional experience requirements: (1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law.
