Summary

This position is located in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), National Soil Erosion Research Laboratory (NSERL), in West Lafayette, IN.

In this position, you will provide professional support to the Unit's Long Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) and Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) field and watershed scale research, and a variety of related agronomic, crop nutrient management, and soil quality experiments conducted at multiple scales from within the lab to on-farm studies.

Duties

Help
  • Assists in planning and conduct of research studies focused on measuring 1) discharge, 2) water quality, 3) crop production and nutrient uptake.
  • Participates in field studies to understand the impact of soil management on soil properties and nutrient cycling, and how that impacts nutrient and sediment transport and crop production/resiliency.
  • Participates in field studies to quantify nutrient use efficiency and whole-watershed nutrient balance.
  • Assists in field collection of soils and plant material for nutrient studies.
  • Performs field data collection, maintenance, calibration, and synchronization of the instrumentation to ensure proper operation throughout the data gathering period.
  • Ensures day-to-day operation of data measurement and recording at the field and watershed sites that meets the scientific quality standard.
  • Prepares and provides reports, abstracts, or other types of presentations.
  • Maintains datasets related to crop yield, soil properties, hydrology, erosion, and water quality from field sites.
  • Provides input as to the feasibility of experiments and possible impact of findings.
  • Analyzes hydrologic data, including the conversion of stream stage records to runoff hydrographs and flood frequency curves.
  • Participates in field and lab rainfall simulation experiments.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements 0401 Series:
1. Degree:
biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
2. Combination of education and experience:
Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Basic Requirements 0470 Series:
1. Degree:
soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility.
OR
2. Combination of education and experience:
courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Basic Requirements 1315 Series:
1. Degree: physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels.
OR
2. Combination of education and experience:
course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Evaluation of Experience: Acceptable experience must have included performance of scientific functions related to the study of water resources, based on and requiring a professional knowledge of related sciences and the consistent application of basic scientific principles to the solution of theoretical and practical hydrologic problems. The following is illustrative of acceptable experience: field or laboratory work that would require application of hydrologic theory and related sciences such as geology, geo-chemistry, geophysics, or civil engineering to making observations, taking samples, operating instruments, assembling data from source materials, analyzing and interpreting data, and reporting findings orally and in writing. In some cases, professional scientific experience that is not clearly water resource experience may be acceptable if such experience was preceded by appropriate education in hydrology or by professional hydrology experience.

Applicants with related experience in hydrology gained through earlier Federal Government employment might have gained that experience in one or more occupational series. Such series include Soil Conservation, GS-457; Forestry, GS-460; Soil Science, GS-470; Civil Engineering, GS- 810; Chemistry, GS-1320; Meteorology, GS-1340; and Geology, GS-1350. Comparable non-Federal experience may be given similar credit.
AND

In addition to the basic requirements above, all applicants must also meet the following minimum qualification requirements:

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in research experiments related to soil, plants, water quality, or hydrology; assisting in field collection of soil, plant, or water samples; and performing field data collection (ex. Motoring water flow or erosion).
OR
Education:
2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
OR
A combination of education and experience as described above.

Physical Demands
Incumbent is expected to work outdoors in hot or cold conditions, year-round, as well as perform work in an office setting. Lifting can exceed 80 lbs. Field experiments will sometimes require several consecutive days in excess of 8h per day, under harsh conditions.

Work Environment
Office work is conducted in a modern laboratory facility having temperature and humidity control. Field work can occur in all weather conditions. Extensive travel (6 days per month) may be required on occasion.
