Summary

The Surgery Clinical Pharmacy Technician is under the supervision of the Associate Chief, Clinical Pharmacy Service, or designee. The Surgery Clinical Pharmacy Technician performs clinical and technical management duties for the Surgery Clinic. The Surgery Clinical Technician works collaboratively as a member on an interdisciplinary team in active pharmacotherapy management for medication optimization for patients, and assisting in the educational mission of the Pharmacy Service.

Help

Major duties include but are not limited to:

Clinical Functions:

  • Performs risk evaluations for controlled substance prescribing through the STORM tool, social history collection, monitoring PDMP/filling
    histories, coordinating UDS, and requests naloxone prescriptions as necessary.
  • Assists clinicians with patient interviews for medication effectiveness.
  • Conducts patient medication reconciliation interviews including obtaining medication histories, allergy information, and medication refill information.
  • Supports anticoagulation clinic with transition of patients to proper bridging therapy.
Administrative Functions:
  • Manages the clinic communication serving as a liaison between pharmacy, surgery, and veterans or caregivers.
  • Coordinates the care for off-station laboratory monitoring (MMU, CBOC, etc..) and travel requests.
  • Assists in the identification, development, and implementation new programs or services in their area of practice.
  • Identifies the patient or customer's situation properly and consistently resolves the problem accurately and in a timely manner to promote positive pharmacy service interactions.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience directly related to the position to be filled.
  • Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
  • English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Policy.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates:

Pharmacy Technician, GS-7:Experience: One year experience at the next lower level and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level (GS-6) including the ability to perform risk evaluations for controlled substances, ability to assist clinicians with patient interviews for medication effectiveness, ability to educates patients on the proper use and care of their medications.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities, In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
*1. Ability to evaluate, analyze workflow, and coordinate work activities.
2. Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes.
3. Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff.
4. Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment.
5. Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process.
6. Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures.
7. Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures.
8. Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyze data in VA information systems.

(KSAs MUST BE CLEARLY DEMONSTRATED IN RESUME UNDER DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES IN ORDER TO BE FOUND QUALIFIED FOR THIS POSITION/GRADE LEVEL).

Preferred Experience: Inpatient Pharmacy experience preferred.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07.

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving stating or sitting for prolonged periods of time, typing,
walking within KCVA medical center, KCVA off-site locations and non-VA community care offices/facilities. Additionally, occasional lifting/carrying of
pharmaceutical supplies may be required, and bending, stooping or stretching.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
