Summary

The Student Nurse Technician (SNT) provides a variety of nursing care duties in accordance with the duties, knowledge and skills identified in this functional statement. SNTs will be given opportunities to provide basic nursing care and procedures in alignment with the competencies learned in the academic setting and validated by VA staff to provide care to patients/residents, and in accordance with established VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS) policies

Help

The SNT will attend to needed and vital requirements of the patient/resident and ensure all regulatory and hospital guidelines and practices are followed, providing for a positive care experience within VAPORHCS.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Provides direct care for acute, long-term, perioperative, and psychiatric patients/residents according to established VAPORHCS policies and nursing procedures.
  • Observes patients/residents for overt or subtle changes in conditions and promptly reports changes to supervising Registered Nurse (RN), e.g., changes in behavior, mood, skin coloring, or appetite.
  • Documents care given, observations, and responses on appropriate tools or forms.
  • Assures receipt of adequate nutritional intake either through observation of patient/resident or assisting the patient/resident with their nutritional needs, i.e., feeding the patient/resident.
  • Monitors and documents intake and output according to established procedures.
  • Recognizes the patient's/resident's autonomy and promotes independence by means of respect, limit setting, and individualized treatment.
  • Contributes to the plan of care with the health care team
Work Schedule: Sunday - Saturday, varying hours between 0700-1930 per service needs.

Qualifications

The SNT applicant MUST meet all requirements listed below by the closing date of this vacancy:

  • Must be a United States citizen at time of entry into Nursing program
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English (English Language Proficiency)
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The GPA must be computed on post-secondary academic work taken within the past 3 years, or based on academic work accepted for credit towards the nursing degree. While a student may have a grade of "C" in a nursing course, the CGPA for the nursing core courses may not be less than a 3.0. Only data on official transcripts should be used for determining grade qualifications
  • Not have a service obligation to any Federal, state, or private institution; or be a recipient of any Federal scholarships that incurs a service obligation.
Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Appointment of Students and other Technicians Under 38 U.S.C. 7405 (a)(1)(D). This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Light to moderate lifting and carrying (up to 44 lbs); Pushing (0.5 hour); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands and legs required; Walking and Standing (6 hours); Kneeling (0.5 hour); Climbing, legs only (0.5 hour); Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/50 and to 20/100 in the other; Ability to distinguish basic colors, and shades of colors; Hearing (aid may be permitted).

Environmental Factors: Outside and inside; Electrical energy; Working around machinery with moving parts; Working closely with others.
