Duties

Help

  • Manages and performs all aspects of investigations to produce timely reports of investigation or memoranda to management. These investigations involve extremely complex and sensitive investigations of alleged or suspected violations of criminal and civil laws, and agency rules and regulations, with particular emphasis on white collar crime that involves fraud, waste,abuse, and government corruption.
  • Independently presents cases to prosecutors and works with prosecutors to prosecute cases.This includes participating in grand jury and trial proceedings.
  • Leads criminal investigative staff and teams by advising, consulting, and performing quality assurance for investigations and other work (e.g., non-investigative and administrative tasks).
  • Assists the Assistant Inspector General for Investigations (AIGI) in creating a vision for the development and implementation of the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) investigative policies and procedures.
  • Implements and monitors investigative planning.
  • Contributes to the improvement of OIG operations through advanced use of technology and process improvements.
  • Advises OIG management of progress or problems related to ongoing investigations.
  • Represents the OIG in discussions with GAO officials and others, as appropriate.
  • Produces or assists others to produce clear and logical products that are targeted to the audience in terms of scope and reflect the value of the work done.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • If selected, you must pass a pre-employment medical examination that will assess if you meet our visual, hearing, physical, and psychological standards.
  • If selected, you must provide proof of completing FLETC's Criminal Investigator Training Program.

Qualifications

  1. You must have experience in a law enforcement position where you primary duties involved investigating, apprehending, or detaining individuals suspected or convicted of offenses against the criminal laws of the United States or protecting the personal safety of United States officials.
  2. You must have successfully completed FLETC's Criminal Investigator Training Program or a program that is equivalent to FLETC's Criminal Investigator Training Program.
  3. One year (52 Weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the NEXT LOWER BAND level in the federal service that demonstrates:
    • Working in an organization with a criminal investigation mission. For example, an Office of Inspector General or Criminal Investigative Division;
    • Applying investigative techniques to expose possible violations of administrative policy or statutes to investigate and refer for prosecution violations of administrative law or agency policy; and
    • Gathering and examining information from data analysis, confidential or anonymous sources, cooperating defendants, or investigative reports from other federal, state, and local investigations to incorporate the information into an affidavit or a presentation to an Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) for acceptance for prosecution.

The U.S. GAO is part of the Legislative Branch of the Federal government. As such, all positions are in the excepted service. Initial appointments, permanent or indefinite, to the GAO require completion of a one or two-year probationary period.

This is an administrative secondary law enforcement office position for Civil Service Retirement Systems (CSRS) and Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS) purposes.

This position is eligible for law enforcement officer (LEO) special retirement provisions under the CSRS and FERS if you meet certain criteria.

This position has a mandatory separation age of 57. You will be required to separate:

  1. On the last day of the month you reach the standard mandatory separation age and have completed 20 years of service under the special retirement provisions for law enforcement officers.
  2. If you reach the mandatory separation age and have not yet completed the required 20 years of service under the special retirement provisions, you must be separated on the last day of the month you complete the 20 years of service.
This position is not eligible for law enforcement availability pay (LEAP).
