Maintain sterility and decontamination of instruments and equipment.
Use appropriate safety methods and conditions when operating sterilizers, equipment, or when using disinfectant solutions and disassembling and reassembling equipment.
Ensure proper storage and transport of sterile goods.
Collect used equipment and supplies for patient care areas for decontamination and reprocessing.
Collect and transport soiled and clean instruments to and from health center(s) while handling them appropriately.
Must pass pre-employment examination.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-3: 6 months of General Experience
GS-4: 6 months of General Experience and 6 months of Specialize Experience.
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
For GS-3: Successful completion of l year of study that included at least 6 semester hours in courses such as medical supply processing, storage, and distribution; sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields related to the position.
For GS-4: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses such as those shown above for GS-3.
Successful completion of training provided through schools, hospitals, the military, or employee development programs of at least 20 classroom hours per week may be substituted for specialized experience on a week-for-week basis. Such training must have provided the knowledge and skills required to perform the work of the position, such as those described under specialized experience above.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
