Summary

Have broad operating authority and is responsible for overall planning, direction and management of key OS functions and programs.
Provide the Director with scientific vision and leadership in science innovation, research, ethics, data modernization and science administration.
Represent the Director in working with OPDIV officials to coordinate agency-specific scientific activities across the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), communicating the results of CDC/ATSDR research, and providing agency leadership in executing DHHS science directives and priorities at CDC/ATSDR.
Serve as the executive sponsor and program executive for key special projects and activities associated with CDC and Office of Science mission objectives. Provide leadership within Office of Science and across CDC for important agency priorities, including but not limited to CDC's Data Modernization Initiative, health equity science, and strategic science strengthening. Provide agency leadership in maintaining the highest of standards and criteria for scientific manuscripts, publications, research, journals, etc.
Provide scientific guidance and leadership to international, national, state, or local government agencies, universities, health-related organizations, private and public foundations and professional associations, public health practitioners, elected officials, the legal community, and law enforcement and emergency response organizations. Provide medical and scientific advice and consultation as a nationally or internationally recognized consultant an expert on science innovation, research, ethics, and science administration.
Exercise leadership to ensure all programs under his/ her direction reflect the principles of workforce diversity in their management and operation in such areas as recruitment and staffing, employee development, staff assignments and communications. In addition to demonstrating personal commitment to objectives of work force diversity, the executive will ensure that subordinate supervisors and managers recognize the importance of their diversity enhancement responsibilities. Basic Qualifications for RF-0601: Applicants must possess a degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. In addition to the basic qualifications requirement, a Ph.D. in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position is required.
Candidates must show clear evidence of specialized experience.
Specialized experience is that which is directly related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, such as applying ethical principles and standards in the administration, research and promotion of public health science and innovation.
Typically, experience of this nature is gained at or above the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
