  • Develops a comprehensive research program focused on the long-term effects of disturbance (drought, invasive species, fire) on shortgrass steppe and desert grasslands, and pinyon-juniper woodlands.
  • Evaluates ecosystem responses to drought, fire, invasive species, human uses, and other disturbances
  • Develops tools, guidelines, and methods for managers of dryland ecosystems to increase resilience and recovery of ecosystem structure and function in response to disturbance.
  • Research in measuring and scaling/modeling above- and below-ground carbon, water, and nutrient pools and fluxes in dryland ecosystems in response to drought, fire, and other disturbances;
  • Scientist provides delivery of research results to peer groups, land managers, and restoration and conservation ecologists
  • Research products may include synthesis documents, websites, reports, assessment tools, data repositories, field tours, and presentations at symposia and workshops.
  • Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work
  • Extensive knowledge of plant physiological ecology; soil biogeochemistry; procedures for range inventory and monitoring; statistical principles of experimental research design and analysis; and some knowledge of fire and disturbance ecology

Qualifications

This is a research scientist position and is classified under the scientist career plan. Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. Final grade level will be determined by a peer review panel. The purpose of the initial review panel is to determine the grade level upon entry into a position.

BASIC REQUIREMENT for Ecologist: You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered for all Ecologist positions. Transcripts must be provided with the application to validate that coursework requirements are met. Attach university course descriptions as necessary.

Individual Occupational Requirements:
Ecologist Series GS- 0408:

Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelors or higher degree that included a major field of study in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE BASIC QUALIFICATIONS, you must possess the specialized experience and/or graduate education listed below. Your application, transcripts and/or resume must clearly show that you possess the specialized experience or education requirements. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
GS-11: One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09). Specialized experience at this level is defined as 52 weeks of all of the following:

  • Conducting the full cycle of scientific research with defined objectives, limited in scope to investigating specific phenomena or problems, or are segments of related investigations. Research at this level requires fairly conventional techniques and involves applying existing theory or methods to areas previously investigated, but under different conditions, or involves adapting previous studies in light of changes in theory or improved techniques and instrumentation and result in contributions that add to scientific and professional knowledge or support developing new or improved methods and techniques. This research must have been in one or more of the following areas: (1) evaluating dryland ecosystem responses to drought, fire, invasive species, human uses, and other disturbances; (2) measuring and scaling/modeling above- and below-ground carbon, water, and nutrient pools and fluxes in dryland ecosystems in response to drought, fire, and other disturbances; and (3) developing tools, guidelines, and methods for managers of dryland ecosystems to increase resilience and recovery of ecosystem structure and function in response to disturbance.
  • Collaborating and building partnerships with researchers
  • Disseminating research findings at conferences or scientific meetings and contributing to results published in peer-reviewed, refereed journals.

Conferred Master's degree or equivalent degree in a research area related to the work of this position which is ecology of dryland ecosystems. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university by the U.S. Department of Education and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Acceptable fields of study include research areas related to the work of the position including dryland ecosystem science, plant physiological ecology, soil biogeochemistry, and disturbance and community ecology, climate change in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, and population or community ecology of dryland ecosystems.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
GS-12: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level. Specialized experience is defined as 52 weeks of all of the following:
  • Conducting the full cycle of scientific research (including identifying research topics, defining study objectives, organizing and conducting the research, interpreting the results, and presenting the findings in the form of reports, demonstrations, manuscripts, and other appropriate technology transfer activities) in the following areas: (1) evaluating dryland ecosystem responses to drought, fire, invasive species, human uses, and other disturbances; (2) measuring and scaling/modeling above- and below-ground carbon, water, and nutrient pools and fluxes in dryland ecosystems in response to drought, fire, and other disturbances; and (3) developing tools, guidelines, and methods for managers of dryland ecosystems to increase resilience and recovery of ecosystem structure and function in response to disturbance.
  • Securing, tracking, and distributing funding for scientific research through a variety of external funding sources.
  • Developing and disseminating research findings in collaboration with resource managers and planners for presentation at conferences or scientific meetings and publishing results in peer-reviewed, refereed journals.
OR
Conferred Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree in a research area related to the work of the position which is ecology of dryland ecosystems. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university by the U.S. Department of Education and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Acceptable fields of study include research areas related to the work of the position including dryland ecosystem science, plant physiological ecology, soil biogeochemistry, and disturbance and community ecology, climate change in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, and population or community ecology of dryland ecosystems.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
