As a Geographer or Cartographer within the Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
-Oversee the management of a large data library used by multiple geologic mapping projects. Includes managing the organization, acquisition, deprecation, and documentation of Terabytes of spatial and non-spatial data stored in a variety of formats.
-Provide GIS technical expertise and support to project scientists. Includes activities such as: working one-on-one with project scientists to resolve workflow issues; creating written documents describing best-practices, methods, and procedures; providing group training sessions; and preparing varied datasets (e.g. remote sensing, elevation data, analog geologic maps, well data) for further use by project scientists.
-Assist in the preparation of geologic map databases and cartographic products for review and publication. Includes activities such as preparing metadata, performing digital reviews to ensure compliance with NCGMP and bureau standards, and preparing cartographic and interpretive products.
-Automate workflows to support and improve the efficiency of tasks related to data management, GIS, and the preparation of cartographic products and data for publication. Includes programming/scripting (e.g., with Arcade or Python), use of automation tools (e.g., Model Builder), and by establishing new workflows, by linking together and adapting existing tools in creative ways.
-Research and implement emerging software and hardware technologies that are beneficial to the compilation, management, and analysis of geologic information. Examples include testing mobile field data collection apps, web-based GIS solutions for collaborative editing of data, and data management and hosting solutions (e.g. ImageServer).
Working Conditions:
The work is primarily sedentary, typically performed in an office environment. Some work may require walking in conjunction with travel and attending meetings, workshops, and conferences away from the work site, or for the purpose of developing and testing mobile field data collection workflows.
SALARY INFORMATION:
GS-09: $54,727 (Step 01) to $71,146 (Step 10);
GS-11: $66,214 (Step 01) to $86,074 (Step 10);
NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.
