Duties

Help
  • Duties are described for the minimum performance level, GS-05.
  • Independently, or as part of a team, conducts surveys; takes and records data, counts, sorts, identifies species, and performs measurements.
  • Analyzes information; prepares reports of findings with appropriate recommendations; assembles information for development of natural resource plans and coordination of resource need information for analytical reports.
  • Utilizes a variety of tools to collect and record data such as numbers, measurements, weights, samples, and special notes.
  • Identifies and classifies principal natural resource types in assigned geographic areas.
  • Participates in developing new or improved prevention practices relating to conditions and findings of natural resource areas where information and data have been collected.
  • Assists in layout of field experiments, pilot projects, impact evaluations, and specific natural resource projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs a variety of routine and frequently complex tasks involving techniques and practices relating to natural resources, such as water, land, fish, plants, wildlife, and soils.

  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of a 2-year probationary period is required.
  • Per Public Law 104-134 all Federal employees are required to have federal payments made by direct deposit to their financial institution.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain weapons certification is a condition of employment in this position as the incumbent will be required to carry a firearm.
  • To maintain employment in this position the incumbent must receive a negative pre-certification drug test result and be enrolled in the random drug testing program. Appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results.
  • Passing a minimum background investigation, firearm classroom training, and annual shooting proficiency test is a condition of employment for this position.

Eligibility Requirements: You must have lived and or worked in or near the geographic boundaries of Southcentral or Southeast Alaska and have special knowledge or expertise concerning the natural and cultural resources in at least one of these areas to participate in Biological Technician activities.

Additional information

The salary amount will be adjusted to include a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). A gradually reducing COLA will continue to be paid after December 31, 2012. Positions filled will be full-time; or full-time seasonal with either 13 pay periods of guaranteed pay status and 13 pay periods of nonpay time or 18 pay periods of guaranteed pay status and 8 pay periods of nonpay time.

These are bargaining unit positions and are represented by NFFE.

If you are selected for a position with further promotion potential, you will be placed under a career development plan, and may be non-competitively promoted if you successfully complete the requirements and if recommended by management. However, promotion is not guaranteed.

ANILCA appointments require a 2 year probationary period. Upon completion of 2 years the incumbent will be non-competitively converted to a career or career-conditional appointment if all of the following are met: successful completion of 2 year probationary period, Office of Personnel Management (OPM) qualification requirements are met for the position the incumbent is converting into, satisfactorily meeting performance requirements, and completion of all prescribed training. If all requirements are not met upon completion of two years in this position, employment will be terminated.
