Duties

  • Duties are described for the minimum performance level, GS-05.
  • May serve as leader of a crew consisting of three or more employees.
  • For recreation/wilderness/trails support:
  • Assists in the implementation of recreation operation and maintenance plans for developed and dispersed recreation sites.
  • Inspects recreation areas, and special use permits for compliance with the permit and management plans, public health regulations, and safety plans.
  • Assists with performing compliance checks and inspections on existing permits under Special-Use authorization.
  • Assists with the maintenance of district recreation facilities such as toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, barriers, dumpsters and other miscellaneous structures.
  • For timber support:
  • Independently applies silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber.
  • Performs preparatory work for timber cruises.
  • Traverses and maps units to be cruised; estimates volumes and quality of timber during cruises using established quality standards; and measures diameters, heights, limited defects, etc.
  • Summarizes and reports data collected as to type, grade, species, size, etc.
  • Describes general conditions found, including possible logging difficulties; and helps to prepare timber sale maps.
  • Marks timber using well defined marking rules, established marking guides, and specific instructions.

Eligibility Requirements: You must have lived and or worked in or near the geographic boundaries of Southcentral or Southeast Alaska and have special knowledge or expertise concerning the natural and cultural resources in at least one of these areas to participate in Forestry Technician activities.

Additional information

The salary amount will be adjusted to include a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). A gradually reducing COLA will continue to be paid after December 31, 2012. Positions filled will be full-time; or full-time seasonal with either 13 pay periods of guaranteed pay status and 13 pay periods of non-pay time or 18 pay periods of guaranteed pay status and 8 pay periods of non-pay time.

These are bargaining unit positions and are represented by NFFE.

If you are selected for a position with further promotion potential, you will be placed under a career development plan, and may be non-competitively promoted if you successfully complete the requirements and if recommended by management. However, promotion is not guaranteed.

Upon completion of 2 years the incumbent will be non-competitively converted to a career or career-conditional appointment if all of the following are met: successful completion of 2 year probationary period, Office of Personnel Management (OPM) qualification requirements are met for the position the incumbent is converting into, satisfactorily meeting performance requirements, and completion of all prescribed training. If all requirements are not met upon completion of two years in this position, employment will be terminated.
