The Geology, Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center is seeking undergraduate and graduate level students working towards a degree in geology to gain practical experience ingeologic sampling.

As a Student Trainee (Geology) you will serve in a trainee capacity, performing routine and recurring development assignments to acquire knowledge and understanding of functions, principles, practices, and methods used in the area of geology.

Duties include:

  • Apply conventional methods to the preparation and analysis of field/remote sensing observations and/or laboratory samples. Methods employed are designed to orient the scientist to a field and/or laboratory method used in the area of specialization.
  • Acquire samples and related data. Makes geological observations, computations, and measurements. Areas of investigation vary depending on particular assignment; examples may include contributing to studies of mineral resource assessments, geologic mapping, geophysical data modelling, and petrographic and microanalytical analyses..
  • Analyze and interpret geological and geophysical data and carries out investigations in accordance with instructions from a senior scientist or project chief. Investigations may involve but are not limited to: seismic and other geophysical data interpretation, surficial and subsurface mapping, developing geologic cross sections, and grade-tonnage and resource estimation.
  • Review geological problems, such as those associated with geologic structure, stratigraphy, mineral resource potential and environmental geology, while in conformance with safe operating procedures, economic considerations, environmental factors, and statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Utilize and is proficient in data interpretation software and various PC-based software applications in order to adequately evaluate geologic-related projects, make determinations, and for the purpose of inputting, displaying, and organizing geological, geochemical, and/or geophysical data for retrieval and evaluation..
  • Contribute to technically authoritative reports on geologic and related studies that convey a range of standard geological and geophysical information. Reports typically contribute to broader research investigations that may form the basis for bureau or cooperator decision-making efforts.
  • May assist in the development or editing of geologic and/or geophysical maps for digital or print publication.
  • Communicate findings in a variety of formats and settings, such as presentations to officials in circumstances where technical information must be presented in a way that is comprehensible to non-technical personnel.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Most work is in an office or laboratory setting, where no special physical effort is required. Some fieldwork (total of several weeks) may be required, where physical effort is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Some work takes place in office or laboratory settings with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Office conditions do not require special safety precautions. Field conditions may include extreme heat or cold, rain or snow, and hazardous conditions such as exposure to extreme temperature, weather conditions, hiking in extreme terrain, carrying up to ~40 lbs of samples/gear, noxious or toxic gasses, ice or flooding.

Qualifications

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible for an appointment under the Pathways Internship Program:

  • You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the school (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum); AND
  • Enrollment is with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved homeschool; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum; AND
  • Students currently enrolled must be in good academic standing maintaining a 2.0 grade point average on a cumulative basis; AND
  • The duties of this position should be related to your academic or career goals.
  • You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program.

Students who successfully complete the internship program may be eligible for conversion to a permanent appointment or a term (1-4 years in duration) appointment without further competition. Eligibility requirements for conversion: must be a U.S. Citizen; complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program (*may waive up to a total of 320 hours under specific conditions); successfully complete your degree or certificate requirements from a qualifying institution; meet the qualification requirements for the position to which you will be converted; meet agency-specific requirements as outlined in the Participant's Agreement; and must have performed successfully in your position as documented through performance evaluations. *NOTE: To learn more about the conditions under which a portion of the work experience hours may be waived, visit https://www.usgs.gov/about/organization/science-support/human-capital/students-and-recent-graduates.

Qualification Requirements

This internship is geared toward students majoring in one of the following areas of study: geology.
GS-7
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-07 level:
Possess 1 year of successfully completed graduate level education (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) in geology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Possess one year of appropriate professional experience that is in or related to the duties of this position is qualifying if it is equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Examples of GS-5 level experience include: conducting field work involving basic geologic and economic geology-oriented mapping and associated rock and geochemical sampling; measure and analyze physical properties of rocks in a laboratory; and use knowledge of minerology and petrology to prepare whole rock powders or mineral separates.

GS-9
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:
Possess 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree in geology or other directly related field of study or master's or equivalent graduate degree in geology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Possess one year of appropriate professional experience in geology that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include: interpreting geophysical data; assisting quality assurance/quality control protocols involved with sample collection and chemical analysis or geologic materials; and assisting constructing surface and subsurface geologic maps.
