Summary

This position is within the Education Division on the staff of Collections, Exhibitions, and Programs. Under the direction of the Head of Education, the Head of Public Programs is responsible for the overall development, management, direction and evaluation of public programs, both in-person and virtual.  The incumbent is part of a senior planning team who help the Head of Education implement the Division’s strategic priorities in support of the National Gallery’s mission, vision, and values.

Duties

Help

The incumbent:

  • Supervise and align accessible programs, community programs, family programs, workshops and lectures for adults, film, and music within the Department of Public Programs.
  • Guide program areas in planning their annual suite of programs and offerings, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and goals.
  • Serve as a programmatic partner, working closely with stakeholders including other PED Heads, Visitor Experience and Evaluation, Curatorial, Digital Experience, and others, and builds authentic relationships with external collaborators.
  • Maintain a broad working knowledge of the field and diverse program formats so that choices can be made to serve audiences most effectively in innovative ways.
  • Set priorities, budget, and direction for dynamic and adaptive public programs based on the collection and exhibitions at the NGA, the incumbent employs knowledge of art history, education, or a related field combined with extensive experience of working with multigenerational audiences in an art museum.
  • Lead and supervise staff to ensure that plans are carried out, established programs are maintained in effective operation, and new, strategic initiatives are incorporated to fulfill audience learning and engagement goals.
  • Models and contributes to a welcoming and friendly atmosphere through a positive and collaborative attitude; reflects the National Gallery’s core values. 
  • Research and evaluates new and emerging scholarship, trends in museum programming, contemporary artistic practices, and higher education and museum profession curricula for program development and management.
  • Oversee the annual departmental budget, allocating funds and resources.
  • Direct budgets for both programs and research projects.
  • Apply principles of sound financial management to all projects to ensure that the department’s programs remain within the bounds of the approved budget.

Specialized Experience Statement: 

For this position, specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-13 level, responsible for the overall development, management, supervision, direction, and evaluation of public programs, both in-person and virtual for an education division in a major organization or institution.

Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates.

  1. Mastery knowledge of the principles, processes, traditions and research methods in the history of art and the history of education, learning theory, and the methodology of museum education; knowledge of educational technology
  2. Mastery knowledge of the field of museum education and educational research and theory, especially technical and applied research; familiarity with schools, curriculum development, learning theory, educational measurement, trends in museum programming, contemporary artistic practices, and higher education and museum profession curricula for program development and management; and educational technology.
  3. Working knowledge of the Gallery’s federal and trust fund budgeting programs; skill in using Oracle, the Gallery’s on-line accounting system, particularly for approval of staff purchases; ability to track multiple project and operations budgets, including Federal, Trust, Grants, and Exhibition’s funding, and create accurate reports; and familiarity with federal and trust procurement and basic contracting procedures. 
  4. Knowledge of management techniques and experience setting goals and drafting procedures; for managing all aspects of the department; ability to lead and supervise work of subordinates  and coordinate programmatic activities  of colleagues within a set time frame and despite rigid deadlines.
