Summary

The Planetary Environments Lab, which studies the chemistry and astrobiology of the atmospheres and surfaces of planetary bodies, is seeking a scientist who specializes in planetary studies, with a strong emphasis on investigations of upper atmospheres, ionospheres, and exospheres of our Solar System. Candidates are expected to have experience in spacecraft mass spectrometry techniques, including instrument ground and flight calibrations, and data processing and interpretation.

  • Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
  • Analyze spacecraft and ground-based observations to determine the nature, magnitude, and interrelationships of the interaction of the solar wind with solar system atmospheres, ionospheres, and exospheres.
  • Build theories and models, including photochemical, magnetofluid dynamics, and probabilistic methods to determine composition and structure of upper atmospheres, ionospheres, and exospheres and the interaction with surfaces and interplanetary space.
  • Apply theoretical models of planetary upper atmospheres and exospheres to devise experiments and missions necessary to address outstanding problems in planetary science.
  • Conduct performance studies of miniaturized neutral and ion mass spectrometers developed for NASA planetary missions.
  • Lead or contribute to ongoing and future PEL aeronomy investigations through instrument and requirement definition, instrument calibration and operation, and data processing.
  • Support an independent planetary aeronomy research program through proposals and contributions to existing investigations.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected. A review may be required to determine the appropriate grade level of the position and supplemental materials may be required from the selectee. Please keep this in mind when indicating the lowest grade you will accept. If selected at the lower grade level, the scientific impact of the incumbent will be examined in addition to other factors, to determine if the person is eligible for promotion.

To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level

  • Conducting aeronomy research and analyses of planetary bodies (e.g. MAVEN, LADEE);
  • Working with a research group to achieve program/project goals;
  • Experience formulating and implementing state-of-the-art planetary investigations
To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level
  • Conducting aeronomy research and analyses of planetary bodies (e.g. MAVEN, LADEE);
  • Overseeing a research group to achieve program/project goals;
  • Overseeing the formulation and implementation of state-of-the-art planetary investigations; and
  • Leading or managing a major aeronomy or space science research project, flight instrument, or laboratory

Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in a) engineering from a college or university that has at least one ABET accredited engineering program or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.
*Note: A computer science curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
