Duties

Help
  • ? Identification of differentially expressed proteins (proteomics) and differentially expressed genes (transcriptomics) from immune cells between healthy and infected animals,
  • ? Study the adaptation of mastitis-causing bacteria that enables growth in the mammary gland,
  • ? Identify and study proteins that alter the effectiveness of the bovine immune system (immunomodulators).

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Minimum qualification requirements are found in the OPM Qualification Standards Operating Manual for General Schedule Positions.

Basic Requirements
Research Biologist, 0401
Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position OR combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Research Physiologist (Animal), 0413
Degree: in one of the basic animal sciences or physiology; or a related discipline or field of science that included at least 24 semester hours in the basic animal sciences, of which 10 semester hours were in animal physiology.

Research Veterinary Officer, 0701
Degree: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, i.e., Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA). The AVMA web site, http://www.avma.org (external link), has a listing of all AVMA-accredited veterinary medical schools. OR
Graduates of foreign veterinary medical schools that are not accredited by the AVMA Council on Education (Refer to AVMA web site, http://www.avma.org (external link)for information about schools in this category) must meet one of the listed requirements. Graduatesof foreign veterinary medical programs must also provide proof of proficiency in the English language by successfully completing one of the nationally and internationally recognized examinations that incorporate assessments of reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. GS-12: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the
GS-12 level of this position are conducting research related to cellular, immunological, and molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis, and development of intervention strategies to prevent and/or control mastitis in cattle; AND publishing research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals; AND presenting research findings at scientific conferences or academic meetings, either in person or virtually.

GS-13: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level of this position are: conducting independent research related to cellular, immunological, and molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis, and development of intervention strategies to prevent and/or control mastitis in cattle; AND publishing research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals; AND presenting research findings at scientific conferences or academic meeting, either in person or virtually; AND experience supervising staff to accomplish research objectives.

Series 0701:
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below FOR THE 701 series ONLY.

GS-12: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal Service conducting research related to cellular, immunological, and molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis, and development of intervention strategies to prevent and/or control mastitis in cattle; AND publishing research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals; AND presenting research findings at scientific conferences or academic meetings, either in person or virtually.

GS-13: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service conducting independent research related to cellular, immunological, and molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis, and development of intervention strategies to prevent and/or control mastitis in cattle; AND publishing research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals; AND presenting research findings at scientific conferences or academic meeting, either in person or virtually; AND experience supervising staff to accomplish research objectives.

Education: In order to qualify at the GS-12 or GS-13 grade levels on the basis of education, applicants must successfully complete relevant graduate study or a dual DVM/graduate degree as described below at an accredited college or school, in addition to completing the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or an equivalent degree mentioned above under Educational Requirements:

GS-12: Master's degree in an area of specialization, including but not limited to, animal science, avian medicine, food safety, infectious diseases, veterinary clinical sciences, pathobiology, biomedical sciences, veterinary anatomy, veterinary preventive medicine, comparative biological sciences, epidemiology, veterinary parasitology, molecular veterinary biosciences, public health, microbiology, pathology, immunology, laboratory animal medicine, toxicology, wildlife, zoological animal medicine, or sciences related to the work of a veterinary medical officer position.

GS-13: Ph.D. degree in any of the above specialties or related sciences.

Residency/Post-Graduate Training Programs:
Residency or post-graduate training programs require 2 to 5 years of study in a specific discipline or specialty. Successful completion of such training qualifies the job applicant for the following grade levels:

GS-12: Successful completion of 2 years of an internship, residency program, or fellowship training program in a discipline related to the position such as veterinary microbiology, immunology, or pathology.
GS-13: Successful completion of 3 years of an internship, residency program, or fellowship training program in a discipline related to the position such as veterinary microbiology, immunology, or veterinary pathology.

Board Certification:
Specialty boards that are recognized by the American Board of Veterinary Specialties (ABVS) of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) certify eligible candidates as specialists in specific veterinary medical fields.
GS-13: Veterinarians who successfully complete all requirements

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
