Duties

Help
  • Performs a wide variety of technical and maintenance work in support of roads, trails, facilities, and recreational sites.
  • Manages and oversees facility construction and land improvement projects.
  • Directs day-to-day scheduling and work of Public Land Corp crews, volunteers and seasonal employees.
  • Serves as a project lead coordinating the annual maintenance budget for facilities, roads, trails, and building maintenance the staff engineer.
  • Performs condition assessments and implements repairs and maintenance to all facilities in the Field Office.
  • Conducts condition assessments to determine the need for repairs and maintenance of three NLCS units which are the Carrizo Plain National Monument, the Piedras Blancas Light Station and the California National Monument.
  • Manages other recreational areas to include the Keysville Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA), the Temblor SRMA, the San Joaquin River Gorge, Atwell Island, the Walker Pass Camp Ground and the Chimney Peak Camp Ground.
  • Oversees and performs repairs and general clean-up operations, maintenance of water systems which includes treating and testing of water, and maintains proper chemical level in toilets.
  • Serves as program lead for field office construction and deferred maintenance projects. The incumbent conducts inspections, administers contracts, and manages the recreation maintenance budget.
  • Operates heavy earth moving equipment with proficiency.
  • Heavy equipment includes tractors, loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, transport trucks and trailers, and other power tools such as chain laws and other trail maintenance tools.
  • Maintains a valid commercial drivers' license for operation of truck and trailer combinations used to transport equipment and materials to and from project sites.

There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials, that you possess the skill level that has equipped you with the particular job elements to successfully perform the duties of Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision.

Physical Demands: The incumbent must be in good physical condition as position requires heavy lifting (over 40 lbs.), waling, climbing, standing, or bending in awkward positions for long periods of time, travel and work in difficult terrain and in extreme climatic conditions. Incumbent must be able to operate earth moving equipment for long periods of time and handle construction site conditions including rough surfaces, slopes, dust, and fumes associated with activities such as construction equipment use, painting, herbicides, and road surfacing. Must have excellent coordination of hand, foot, and eye; manual dexterity; good reflexes; very good depth perception; plus exercise a high degree of concentration and mental alertness in order to manipulate the controls to operate equipment in steep terrain and unstable soils.

Work Environment: When working in buildings, the environment is often dusty with poor ventilation. Outside work is often conducted in extreme heat or cold. Work is often performed subject to grease and fumes while working on equipment, painting and welding. Incumbent is required to wear protective clothing and is subject to constant noise and vibration. Work is often on hillsides and uneven surfaces or scaffolding. Work also involves use of herbicides. The work environment also includes interacting with people and organizations in very diverse situations including leading teams in the field.
