Help

This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. The Student Trainee (Medical & Health) will be working at the William S Middleton VA Medical Center in Madison, WI. This position is located in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service Line. Assignments will consist of performing a variety of standardized tests and examinations under regular technical supervision, performing a variety of routine procedural duties related to the operation of the Medical Center and Lab, and performing special projects as assigned. This is an excepted service position under 38 USC 7405 (1) (a) (D).
Duties Include:

  • Sorts and counts clearly marked packages and containers of laboratory supplies and replenishes storage cabinets at workstations.
  • Maintains a clean work area and assists higher graded technicians with maintenance throughout the laboratory.
  • Prepares patient collection kits and distributes them to appropriate locations within the lab.
  • Performs a variety of standardized tests, examinations, and determinations using well established techniques and procedures.
  • Receives and accessions various laboratory specimens into the Laboratory Information System.
  • Prepares specimens by centrifugation to the Laboratory Processing Instruction and packages specimens according to Federal Regulations.
  • Makes telephone notifications of unacceptable/questionable laboratory specimens and provides troubleshooting regarding specimen acceptability.
  • Works directly with Medical Technologists and other hospital personnel related to patient care.


Work Schedule: Alternating Weekends (Saturday & Sunday): 7:00am - 3:30pm

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/05/2022.

Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled.

BASIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: For hire and during employment, must be a student currently enrolled on a full or half-time basis in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. All education beyond high school must be accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. At the time of appointment and upon request, students must demonstrate an overall Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) of 2.0 or above on a 4.0 scale as recorded on the official transcript.

Education: To qualify at the GS-04 level, students must have completed two (2) full academic year of post-high school study or an Associate's Degree in related Medical and/or Health Fields. One full academic year is the number of credit hours determined by the college, university, or school to represent one year of full-time study. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

General Experience: Completion of 1 academic year of study and two periods of student trainee work experience; or (b) completion of 1½ academic years of study and one period of student trainee work experience.

Combination: Must possess a combination of general experience and education as described above. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Physical demands are moderate. It requires regular and recurring physical exertion and strain such as long periods of standing or considerable walking.

You are excluded from health benefits coverage if you are expected to work less than 130 hours per month for at least 90 days.


Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
