Summary

Duties

Help
  • Provides metabolic analytical expertise and leadership as required by the project team.
  • The team objectives are to isolate and identify plant natural products, which have defined biological and/or chemical activities that can be utilized by agricultural industries in new or enhanced products.
  • Characterizes and defines the mode of action of these compounds; and to develop methods for commercial production and use of these compounds.

Qualifications


Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Minimum qualification requirements are found in the OPM Qualification Standards Operating Manual for General Schedule Positions. Qualification requirements must be identified for each grade level advertised.

Basic Requirements:
Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
or
Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Additional Requirements
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled.

GS-12: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the duties of the position (i.e. plant natural product characterization, functionality and metabolism) OR one-year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal Service conducting research related to the analysis of plants for natural product composition and functionality; presenting research findings at academic meetings or scientific conferences; and publishing research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

GS-13: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service conducting independent research related to the analysis of plants for natural product composition and functionality and evaluation of plant natural product metabolomics; Publishing research results in peer-reviewed scientific journal; Presenting research findings at scientific conferences or academic meeting, either in person or virtually; Experience supervising staff to accomplish research objectives.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To further support your qualifications, it is strongly recommended that you submit a one-page abstract of your MS thesis and/or Ph.D. dissertation. Failure to do so could result in loss of your consideration/referral. This position requires the selectee to undergo a pre-employment check and a full background investigation. The incumbent will be subject to periodic reinvestigations.


Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. *Final grade level may be determined by a peer review panel.
