Summary

This position is located in the Department of Public Works, United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Maritime Administration (MARAD).

This position is established to install, maintain, repair, troubleshoot, and modify single and multiple power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment, hot air furnaces, and similar equipment systems.  Repair/replace flushometers, clears drain stoppages, rebuild fixtures, repairs leaks and any other jobs assigned.

Duties

Help

As a Boiler Plant Operator, you will:

  • Installs, maintains, repairs, troubleshoots, and modifies single and multiple power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment, hot air furnaces, and similar equipment systems.
  • Performs major repairs, alteration, rebuild, and installation of natural gas and oil-fired heating units, hot water and steam generating boilers and hot air furnaces.
  • Has knowledge of a variety of complex heating units and systems and equipment such as coal, gas, and oil-fired boilers sufficient to maintain prescribed boiler temperatures and pressure and systems. 
  • Has the ability to plan and lay out the installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment.
  • Has skill in the use of tools and equipment of the trade.
  • Has detailed knowledge of the operating characteristics of the machinery, equipment, and systems in questions; their functional relationships; the applicable installation and repair procedures, methods, and trace practices.

This position is ideal for a highly motivated, experienced professional who has experience as a Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic at the Journeyman level performing installation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and modifying single and multiple power boilers , and hot air furnaces. The ideal candidate has experience repairing/replacing flushometes, clearing drain stoppages, rebuilding fixtures, and repairing leaks.

  • WORK SCHEDULE: This position requires working on various shifts (day and night) including Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays as necessary, and is subject to 24-hour call-back in emergency situations.
  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position are based on the  training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.

To qualify for the WG-10, your experience should include experience equal or equivalent to the following:

  • Applicants must have experience at the journey level as a Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic without normal supervision to install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, modify, high and low pressure systems and equipment such as steam heating equipment, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum and circulation pumps.

ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

BARGAINING UNIT: This is a Bargaining unit position represented by AFGE, 2116.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The employee works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent standing, bending, crouching, kneeling, and climbing. Occasionally works from scaffolds and platforms and may perform strenuous work while standing, sitting, or lying. Frequently lifts and carries tools and equipment weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds) and occasionally items weighing more with assistance of material lifting devices or other workers.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. Occasionally services equipment outdoors under adverse weather conditions. The employee is continually exposed to the potential for burns, electrical shocks, cuts, strains, bruises, and chemical irritations. To reduce dangers from these and other similar conditions, they follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as safety glasses, hard-toe shoes, respirators, hardhats, and fire-retardant gloves. The employee is sometimes required to make installations and repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections. The employee is occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones.
