Duties

Help
  • Conceives, plans, conducts research projects to develop/improve methodologies for agrochemical residue analysis in horticultural commodities.
  • Quantifies agrochemical signatures and identifies factors affecting the fate of agrochemical residues in horticultural crops in the field and postharvest.
  • Develops innovative treatments and strategies to overcome agrochemical restrictions leading to compliance with residue tolerances.
  • Ensures that new treatments comply with environmental, human health, sanitary, and phytosanitary regulations, including local, state, national, and international regulations.
  • Transfers knowledge and technology through scholarly publications, patents, and presentations to scientific and industry groups.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Basic Qualification Requirement - GS-1320

Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

or

Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

Additional Requirements:
In addition to meeting the basic requirements for the series described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.
GS-12: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the duties of the position (i.e., analytic chemistry, environmental chemistry, agricultural chemistry, organic chemistry, pesticide science, soil science with emphasis on analytical chemistry) OR 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal Service OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience. The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-12 level are:
  • Conducting research related to quantification of agrochemical residue in matrices such as crop/soil systems and/or horticultural goods;
  • Conducting statistical analyses to validate research results related to quantification of agrochemical signatures in the environment;
  • Publishing research results on agrochemical residue analysis and quantification, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques, in peer-reviewed journals; and
  • Presenting research findings at scientific meetings.

GS-13: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal Service. The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-13 level are:

  • Conducting research related to development of clearly novel analytical methodologies and approaches for quantification of agrochemical residues in matrices such as crop/soil systems and/or horticultural goods;
  • Leading a research team that conducts and reports research related to agrochemical residue analysis and quantification
  • Publishing research results on agrochemical residue analysis and quantification, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques, as first or corresponding author in peer-reviewed journals; and
  • Presenting research findings at national and/or international scientific meetings.
