Help

As aSupervisory Criminal Investigator/Assistant IG for Investigations, PE-1811-3your typical work assignments may include the following:

  • Oversees complex and sensitive investigations of alleged or suspected criminal and civil law violations, agency rules and regulations, and white collar crime that involves fraud, waste abuse and government corruption;
  • Determines which complaints to investigate, resource requirements, and scheduling of investigations or major projects;
  • Directs, manages, and supervises criminal investigation staff and investigative teams;
  • Interviews witnesses, subjects, and informants to collect data. Distinguishes between relevant and irrelevant information or evidence. Issues appropriate subject warnings. Issues documentary subpoenas;
  • Manages GAO-OIG Hotline by evaluating complaints to determining investigative or administrative actions, referring complaints to appropriate OIG staff, monitoring the Hotline activities, and conducting quality control reviews.

Qualifications

Qualifying Experience:

1. You must have experience in a law enforcement position where you primary duties involved investigating, apprehending, or detaining individuals suspected or convicted of offenses against the criminal laws of the United States or protecting the personal safety of United States officials.

2. Successfully completed the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center's Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) or an equivalent basic criminal investigator training program.

Medical Requirements

3. If selected, you must pass a fitness-for-duty examination. The duties of positions in this series require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of finger, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs, and feet must be sufficiently intact and functioning in order that applicants may perform the duties satisfactorily. Sufficiently good vision in each eye, with or without correction, is required to perform the duties satisfactorily. Near vision, corrective lenses permitted, must be sufficient to read printed material the size of typewritten characters. Hearing loss, as measured by an audiometer, must not exceed 35 decibels at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz levels. Since the duties of these positions are exacting and responsible, and involve activities under trying conditions, applicants must possess emotional and mental stability. Any physical condition that would cause the applicant to be a hazard to himself/herself, or others is disqualifying.


Specialized Experience
4. In addition to the qualifying experience, you must have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower Band or GS-13 or 14 level equivalent in the Federal Service, or equivalent private/public sector experience managing a federal fraud, waste, and abuse hotline function; independently issuing and enforcing subpoenas; referring cases to prosecutors; determining appropriate search and seizure activities for an investigation (e.g. search warrants, when to give Garrity and/or Kalkines warning at subject interviews).

This is an administrative secondary law enforcement office position for Civil Service Retirement Systems (CSRS) and Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS) purposes.

This position is eligible for law enforcement officer (LEO) special retirement provisions under the CSRS and FERS if you meet certain criteria.

This position has a mandatory separation age of 57. You will be required to separate:

  1. On the last day of the month you reach the standard mandatory separation age and have completed 20 years of service under the special retirement provisions for law enforcement officers.
  2. If you reach the mandatory separation age and have not yet completed the required 20 years of service under the special retirement provisions, you must be separated on the last day of the month you complete the 20 years of service.
This position is not eligible for law enforcement availability pay (LEAP).
