Duties

Help
  • Provides advice and counsel to application programmers concerning effective and efficient programming techniques and problem analysis methods to ensure that available system resources are used effectively.
  • Provides continuous monitoring of all active CICS regions during assigned tour of duty in the Level 3 system monitoring area.
  • Actively reviewing all system performance indicators to ensure that operational outages are minimized and system response time is kept to a minimum.
  • Reviews PMS records involving problems of a moderate complexity which involve online system problems and actively researches each problem to determine its cause and develop a solution which will prevent a recurrence.
  • Ensures that all requests for assistance from all sources are properly logged and promptly answered.

Qualifications

Applicants must qualify for the series and grade of the posted position. Experience must be IT-related; the experience may be demonstrated by paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training (for example, IT certification), as appropriate.

To qualify for the 2210 IT Specialist series, applicants must demonstrate the following IT-related competencies:

Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.

Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.

Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.

Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

To qualify for this GS-7 level position, the applicant must have at least one of the following (experience or education - see education section for additional information:

  • 52 weeks of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-5 level (or above) in the federal service, which is in or related to the work of the position to be filled that has equipped applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Such IT-related work involves assisting with, supporting, or performing systems analysis, or maintenance of networks, systems, software, or applications. Qualifying experience includes assisting with, supporting, or performing any of the following: providing systems administration, or network or mainframe support, to solve defined problems, ensuring continuous operations of systems, applications, or networks, OR maintaining live systems, applications, or networks; OR
  • A bachelor's degree AND superior academic achievement. The educational degree must be in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management; or a degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks. Superior academic achievement is defined as: (1) graduating with at least a 3.0/4.0 GPA; (2) graduating in the top third of the graduating class; or (3) membership in a national scholastic honor society; OR
  • One full year of graduate level study, or a Master's or higher degree, e.g., Ph.D., etc., in a field that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work of the position. The educational degree must be in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management; or a degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.
NOTE: Transcripts must be provided to demonstrate claimed education. Appointments from this announcement may be made within 6 months of the closing date of this announcement. Qualifying degrees or other education must be obtained and demonstrated prior to appointment. If one does not currently have the qualifying education, one must provide proof that it was obtained upon receipt of a tentative offer.
