This research is in support of NASA's Science Mission Directorate and is a major element of Langley Research Center's mission in atmospheric science.

The Senior Scientist Radiation Sciences:

- Serves as the Agency's leader informing researchers from NASA, and in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), academia and foreign countries in the development, production, and application of advanced satellite data analysis techniques for studies of cloud and radiation processes impacting global climate data, as well as carrying out theoretical studies of the effects of greenhouse gases on climate.

- Develops plans and requirements for a long-term scientific program in Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) and its effects on climate. Presents these approaches to NASA as well as the broader national and international science communities.

- Maintains and fosters the highest quality science in studies of clouds and radiation with the responsibility to lead innovative methods and processes to improve Agency radiation sciences programs/projects.

- Reviews and advises the technical activities and scientific research relative to Clouds and the Earth's Radiate Energy System (CERES) and other cloud and radiation processes, programs, and investigations.

- Provides scientific guidance for ERB satellite mission continuity of the established record with U.S. and international PIs in the Earth System Observatory (ESO), Earth System Explorers program, as well as aircraft and ground-based observations coupled with the climate modeling community.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Candidates must possess expert knowledge and at least 3 years of directly related specialized experience in long-term scientific research of the Earth's radiation budget and its impact on atmospheric processes and climate, with a special emphasis on the role of clouds and aerosols in climate.

At least 1 year of this experience must have been in planning and executing difficult programs of national significance or planning and executing specialized programs that show outstanding attainments in the field of research or consultation. At least 1 year of the directly related specialized experience must be at least equivalent to experience at the GS-15 level.

Education

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science.

If the selectee is a current NASA employee with placement rights, the employee will receive a temporary promotion and serve for a period of 3 to 5 years. If the selectee is not a current NASA employee, the selectee will be placed on a term appointment for a period of 3 to 5 years. Upon conclusion of the term appointment, the appointment will either conclude OR the selectee may be converted permanently without further competition.
