Summary

The incumbent is a Research Ecologist/Soil Scientist/Hydrologist in the Agroecosystems Management Research Unit in Ames, Iowa. The incumbent will contribute to the understanding, quantifying and managing of interactions between climate, soils and land-use and their impact on hydrology and water quality at field, landscape and watershed scales. This research is a component of ARS National Program 211, "Water Availability and Watershed Management".

Duties

Help
  • Conduct landscape scale experiments and analyses to improve our understanding of soil-landscape processes and assist in the design of landscape-based agricultural management systems to improve the ability to predict conservation effectiveness.
  • Develop and evaluate tools to quantify hydrologic and water quality dynamics and responses to changes in land use, conservation practices and climatic conditions, including evolving climate change scenarios at field and watershed scales.
  • Interpret spatial and temporal linkages between changes in climate, agricultural management and the delivery and value of ecosystem services in watersheds.
  • Improve watershed processes using adaptive approaches, blending long-term records and understanding of geographic information system data and analyses, remote sensing, non-traditional statistical procedures and modeling applications.
  • Collaborates with other ARS, university and private sector scientists to build a multi-disciplinary team necessary for this research, including the Long-Term Agroecosystem Research Network and Conservation Effects Assessment Project.

Basic Qualification Requirements for Ecology Series, 0408:

  • Degree: biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

Basic Qualification Requirements for Soil Science Series, 0470:

  • Degree: soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility.
OR
  • Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Qualification Requirements for the Hydrology Series, 1315:

  • Degree: physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels.
OR
  • Combination of education and experience: course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Acceptable experience: Acceptable experience must have included performance of scientific functions related to the study of water resources, based on and requiring a professional knowledge of related sciences and the consistent application of basic scientific principles to the solution of theoretical and practical hydrologic problems. The following is illustrative of acceptable experience: field or laboratory work that would require application of hydrologic theory and related sciences such as geology, geo-chemistry, geophysics, or civil engineering to making observations, taking samples, operating instruments, assembling data from source materials, analyzing and interpreting data, and reporting findings orally and in writing. In some cases, professional scientific experience that is not clearly water resource experience may be acceptable if such experience was preceded by appropriate education in hydrology or by professional hydrology experience.

Additional Requirements:

GS-12: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the duties of the position (e.g., soil science, soil ecology, soil biochemistry, soil conservation, soil microbiology, agronomy, freshwater ecology, or agricultural or civil engineering) OR 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience.

GS-13: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal Service.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised.

The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-12 level are:
  • Conducting research related to improving nutrient and water-use efficiency in agricultural systems at field, landscape and watershed scales while minimizing the environmental impact and enhancing sustainability; AND
  • Publishing research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals; AND
  • Presenting research findings at scientific conferences or academic meetings, either in person or virtually.
The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-13 level are:
  • Leading, planning, and conducting independent and collaborative research related to improving nutrient and water-use efficiency of agricultural systems at field, landscape and watershed scales while minimizing the environmental impact and enhancing sustainability; AND
  • Publishing research results as the primary author in peer-reviewed scientific journals; AND
  • Being invited to present research findings at scientific conferences, either in person or virtually; AND
  • Working with stakeholders to enhance research efforts and/or writing grant proposals to expand existing programs.
