Summary

This Interdisciplinary Bioclimatologist/Physical Scientist position supports USDA Forest Service, Research and Development, Sustainable Forest Management Research. This employee will serve as a nationally recognized scientific expert in atmospheric and fire weather sciences with an emphasis on biogeochemical sciences.

Duties

  • Duties are listed at the full performance level.
  • Review emerging issues of atmospheric and fire weather research as they relate to applied biogeochemical science.
  • Provide advice and guidance to top agency management on the most challenging atmospheric resources, fire/atmospheric and bioclimatic related problems.
  • Serve as liaison between agency officials and other federal agencies on critical issues involving national policies.
  • Prepare and direct preparation of national reports summarizing research progress in atmospheric and fire weather research.
  • Serve as agency, departmental, and/or federal representative on national and international work groups, task forces, and committees.
  • Develop national research strategies, standards, and guides related to atmospheric and fire weather research.

This is an interdisciplinary Atmospheric Sciences and Fire Weather Bioclimatologist/Physical Scientist position.

To qualify for this position, you must meet the Basic Education Requirement for one of the series below.

Degree: successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

--OR--

A combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major described above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Degree: successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

--OR--

Combination of education and experience: 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic education requirement, you must also possess experience in the amounts listed below. Graduate level education alone is not qualifying for the grades advertised.

Specialized Experience Requirements for the GS-14 level:

At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. To qualify at this grade level, this specialized experience must include all the following:

  • Coordinating and facilitating atmospheric and fire weather science research and aiding in the development of strategic research plans;
  • Directing long-term research projects of regional or national scope;
  • Serving as a recognized expert in the field of atmospheric and fire weather sciences, with a record of publication; AND
  • Leading natural resource research projects and building coalitions to achieve timely and high-quality results to advance science, and the management of scientific research
Specialized Experience Requirements for the GS-15 level

At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service. To qualify at this grade level, this specialized experience must include all the following:
  • Serving as a consultant and advisor to policy and decision makers as a recognized authority in atmospheric and fire weather sciences research;
  • Providing strategic network leadership to establish natural resources research program vision and build coalitions locally and nationwide; AND
  • Building strategic alliances with other agencies and organizations to enhance delivery of programs, science, and information related to forest management

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

There is no substitution of education for specialized experience.
