Duties

Help

  • Organizes data to support statistical analyses and proposes changes that improve the analytic utility of the data files, data organization, and data management processes.
  • Identifies other potential data sources, assesses their relevance and quality to determine whether they are appropriate for inclusion.
  • Works with relevant data from multiple sources; analyzes data to identify important patterns and trends, and assists in synthesizing the findings from the data into integrated presentations.
  • Applies mathematical statistical techniques in order to conduct new surveys or to improve the validity, quality, or other characteristics of assigned programs and projects.
  • Formulates recommendations to develop or improve statistical surveys and analyses and to enhance existing data and implements those recommendations.
  • Creates programs using standard statistical languages, such as SAS or R, to run sophisticated analyses based on principles and techniques
    drawn from the fields of statistics, economics, and other relevant social science disciplines to analyze large or complex data, such as weighted survey data.
  • Develops reusable programming code to assist in data dissemination activities. Programming code may be used to generate typical cross-tabulations, longitudinal data series, statistical hypothesis testing, data visualizations and more.

  • Reviews existing guidance and policies and identifies gaps or areas for improvement; develops guidance and policies for data files, data documentation, data organization, data management and code development.
  • Represents NCSES and NSF in areas of assigned responsibilities at professional meetings, conferences, and visits to industrial, academic, federal, or non-profit organizations.
  • Maintains state-of-the-art scientific knowledge of statistical, economic, and/or social science methods, serving as a resource in the assigned area and in related methodological developments, such as the use of novel statistical analysis techniques, linked data sets, and multivariate data analysis.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent.

Qualifications

Depending on the professional occupation that you want to be considered for, to qualify you must meet at least one of the following basic education and/or experience requirements:

GS-1529 (Mathematical Statistician):

  1. Degree: that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics. OR
  2. Combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

GS-1530 (Statistics):

  1. Degree: bachelor's degree that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in math & stats combined but with at least 6 semester hours in stats), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, engineering; or social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, or psychology. OR
  2. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in 1 above, plus additional education & experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree. The experience should include professional statistical work such as sampling, collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, & applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple & multiple correlation, analysis of variance, & tests of significance.

 In addition to meeting at least one of the basic education and/or experience requirements described above, you must also meet the following specialized experience.

For the GS-11 level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: applying mathematical statistical theories to execute statistical and survey projects. Assisting in planning and implementing ongoing statistical surveys; participating in developing methods for analyzing and publicizing data; recommending proposals for modifying survey, analysis, publication, and communication techniques; conducting review of data reports and statistical summaries.

Education
