Duties

Help
  • Performs inventories of public lands to document occurrence and distribution of a variety of plant species.
  • Complies occurrence and distribution data, cover maps, and BLM herbarium study mounts.
  • Enters and retrieves data from automated databases.
  • May make recommendations on plant habitat protection, enhancement, or ?critical? habitat designation to supervisor.

Qualifications

For GS-06: one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05 level. Examples of specialized experience may include surveying, mapping and documenting a variety of plant species and habitat conditions; compiling occurrence and distribution data, cover maps, and herbarium study mounts; assisting in performing studies in habitat improvement projects; and compiling data obtained through plant transects and assembling data into a logical sequence for review.

Graduate education or an internship where it is directly related to the work of the position.

A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.

For GS-07: one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06 level. Examples of specialized experience may include surveying, mapping and documenting a variety of plant species, including special status species, and habitat conditions; compiling occurrence and distribution data, cover maps, and herbarium study mounts; collects plant data for analysis of current condition, trend, and for determination of effects using established protocols and methods; record, organize and manage plant related data and records in a manner that will facilitate their access, use, and analysis; and assist in performing in long-term monitoring of plant species and populations.

One full year of graduate education directly relating to the work of the position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.

Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to li and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.

Work Environment: Office work is performed in a setting that is adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated. When doing fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme, adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests or animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.

Education

Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
