Salary for the: MIAMI-FORT LAUDERDALE-PORT ST. LUCIE, FL Locality Area.
GS-7: $47,667 (Step 1) to $61,962 (Step 10) GS-9: $58,306 (Step 1) to $75,799 (Step 10)
NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.
As a Biologist within the Fort Collins Science Center, duty stationed in Homestead, Florida, some of your specific duties will include:
Participating in all aspects of the planning and execution of complex studies and investigations concerning Burmese pythons and other invasive reptile species in the Greater Everglades Ecosystem
Demonstrated ability in preparing, writing, and assisting with preparation of scientific journal articles, proposals, presentations, and reports to funders
Knowledge of database management principles as they apply to the maintenance and analysis of field studies in ecology or herpetology, as demonstrated by providing quality control over data and ensuring that all databases meet high quality standards
Conducting limited lab and fieldwork and associated tasks of radio telemetry, euthanasia, necropsies, field data collection, assisting principal investigators to ensure data and safety procedures are followed
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The field work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Laboratory work requires moderate physical ability and agility and dexterity to manipulate samples and operate equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

Driver's License/Driving Record - You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Pre-Employment Medical - Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.

Qualifications
BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.
A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. *OR* B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-07:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-07 level:
1 year of successfully completed graduate level education (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) in biology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

**OR one year of appropriate professional experience that is in or related to the duties of this position is qualifying if it is equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position.
Examples of GS-5 level experience could include: planning, organizing, and implementing scientific investigations of vertebrate species (reptiles and amphibians) in the field; conducting radiotelemetry on herpetofauna species; leading field crews in the implementation of scientific field studies of vertebrates; performing data analyses on data subsets from field studies of vertebrates; writing reports; and using of database software for organization of large and complex biological data. The tasks performed at this level involved following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures; solving minor problems and making routine decisions.

For GS-09:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:
**Master's or equivalent graduate degree in biology or other directly related field of study or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or other related disciplines if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.
**OR one year of appropriate professional experience in biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service.
