This Legal Assistant (OA) position serves as a legal assistant in the Criminal Division, responsible for directly and independently supporting Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA) by providing a wide variety of technical assistance services. The work requires a specialized knowledge of the processes, procedures, and practices of legal assistance activities in conjunction with knowledge of clerical and administrative office skills and an ability to apply these skills to increase the effectiveness of the assigned AUSA.
Typical work assignments will include:
Examines, prepares and processes a variety of legal documents which are characteristically voluminous and complex in format.
Determines the need for assembly and preparation of a variety of legal documents, e.g., criminal complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, etc.
Obtains needed information from files, law enforcement agencies, or other sources, and submits completed legal documents to the appropriate AUSA or, directly to the court, after review by AUSA.
Prepares domestic and foreign travel for assigned AUSAs.
Prepares and log cases after completion for archival filing.
Background investigation, credit check, and drug test required.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying:

Typing Proficiency: You must be able to type at least 40 WPM based on a 5 minute sample with 3 or fewer errors.
GS-7: Must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal government applying knowledge of legal regulations, techniques, and procedures to perform a variety of legal assistance work. This type of work includes:
1) Scheduling hearings, meetings or engagements;
2) Examining case files to determine sufficiency of documentation to identify material that may be pertinent to issues or cases;
3) Conducting research for case information through records, reference or historical material; and
4) Generating, modifying, and interpreting computer-generated reports.

Time-in-Grade Requirements: Under competitive merit promotion procedures, any individual who is currently holding, or who has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under a non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet "time-in-grade" requirements (have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade of the grade for which you are applying). Additional information
This position is open to Competitive Merit Promotion, Non-Competitive, and Special Hiring Authority eligibles. You must meet the requirements for one of the following categories to be eligible.
1. A current permanent competitive service employee; former Federal employee who achieved career status in the competitive service; or former Federal employee who served on a career conditional appointment without achieving career status in the competitive service who was separated less than three years ago. This includes applicants who have not previously held, or currently hold this position and grade with the same promotion potential as announced for this announcement. You must submit an SF-50 that shows competitive service eligibility to be considered.
2. A Veteran applying under the Veterans Employment Opportunity Act (VEOA), must submit a copy of your DD-214 showing an honorable discharge to be considered. To be eligible, a veteran must be honorably separated and either a preference eligible or have substantially completed 3 or more years of active service.
