Help

The Office of the Inspector General is seeking an Information Technology Specialist (Information Security) to assist in protecting the Office's information systems. Specific duties include the following: Monitors, evaluates and reports on the status and condition of cyber security risks in the OIG and NSF information technology programs; Ensures that internal controls, counter measures, and vulnerabilities are identified or developed to minimize or eliminate the unauthorized disclosure of information and ensure data confidentiality, integrity, and availability; Prepares and evaluates information systems security documentation (e.g., systems security plans, risk assessments, disaster recovery plans, and user security guides); Ensures sound information security principles are reflected in the goals and objectives of the OIG; Promotes information assurance issues among management and employees; Assists in the development, configuration, installation and maintenance of the OIG local area network, personal computers, and applications that support the OIG operations; and Ensures that appropriate system security policies are implemented that safeguard systems and data integrity.

Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-09 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: analysis of the interrelationships of components of a system; planning the sequence of actions necessary to accomplish the assignment; and personal responsibility for at least a segment of the overall project. Such skills are typically gained in the computer field or through carrying out project assignments consisting of several related tasks.

OR Have a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. To be considered, the advanced degree must consist of a major study from one of the following: computer science, information science, information systems management, mathematics, or engineering, or course work that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems and provided knowledge equivalent to a major in the computer field.

OR Have a combination of education and experience that meet the qualification requirements at this grade level.

To qualify at the GS-11 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service.  Examples of specialized experience include: knowledge of the approaches, techniques, and requirements appropriate to a computer applications area or computer specialty area; planning the sequence of actions necessary to accomplish an assignment (including coordination outside the organization and development of project controls); and adaptation of guidelines to the needs of the assignment.

OR Have a PhD. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. To be considered, the advanced degree must consist of a major study from one of the following: computer science, information science, information systems management, mathematics, or engineering, or course work that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems and provided knowledge equivalent to a major in the computer field.

OR Possess a combination of graduate level education as described above; beyond the two full years of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.

In addition to the specialized experience stated above, applicants must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the following four competencies:

  • Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
  • Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  • Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
