Duties

Help

As a Supervisory Research Physician (Public Health), you will:

  • Serve as a senior medical advisor to the Division Director and the Science Officer and other CDC senior leadership on both national and international public health medical program activities.
  • Analyze data collected and compiled from intramural and extramural studies of specific disease prevention.
  • Work with program managers, policy makers, and experts in the fields of public health and health services research from across CDC as well as from other Federal agencies, state and local health departments, and nongovernmental organizations to improve the quality and scientific rigor of health services research and evaluation.
  • Represent CDC as a project officer or technical monitor on research projects and contracts.
  • Comply with all applicable Federal and State safety and health regulations and established CDC/ATSDR safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS FOR Physician Series, 0602:
Applicants must possess a Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association (external link); Association of American Medical Colleges (external link); Liaison Committee on Medical Education (external link); Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association (external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (external link), a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.

Licensure
For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the minimum qualification requirements listed below:

Minimum Qualifications For GP-15:
Five years of residency training in the specialty of the position to be filled.

NOTE: A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (external link), (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) (external link).

Have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, to include experience leading, planning and overseeing work-related respiratory disease prevention programs, as well as leading scientific groups in occupational respiratory disease/health hazards research and investigations, and providing the results to leadership.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

  • Current or Former Political Appointees: Agencies must seek prior approval from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) before they can appoint a current or recent political appointee to a competitive or non-political excepted service position at any level under the provisions of title 5, United States Code. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, or Non-career SES employee in the executive branch, you MUST disclose that to the Human Resources Office.
