Student Nurse Technician will be given opportunities to provide basic nursing care and procedures in alignment with the competencies learned in the academic setting and validated by VA staff in order to provide care to patients/residents with acute to chronic conditions in a health care setting. function as a member of the nursing care team and assist licensed nursing staff in the care of patients/residents receiving preventive, acute, sub-acute chronic, maintenance, and hospice care. The Student Nurse Technician program focuses on career development and nursing skills that translate into multiple opportunities within the Salt Lake City VA Healthcare System.

Responsible for appropriately utilizes glucose monitoring machine to collect and document appropriate glucose readings for assigned veteran, observation of patients, documents care given, observations and responses on appropriate tools or forms, performs suctioning, monitors and documents patient intake and output , performs nursing procedures within scope of practice and according to policies and standard procedures to care for the veteran for such procedures but not limited to: enemas, catheterization, colostomy care, skin care simple dressing, application of braces and prosthetic devices, works on small group activities with Veterans/residents according to the patients/resident treatment plan, recognizes the residents' autonomy and promotes independence by means of respect, limit setting and individualized treatment, actively participates in Treatment Planning Meetings, utilizes equipment to promote the veteran self-care, such as; lift equipment, Hydro sound Tubs, and Veteran/Resident Wandering System, verbally provides patient information to the treatment team for inclusion in the veteran/residents' plan of care, participates in maintaining a clean, safe environment for the patient/resident, removes defective equipment, reports hazards, observes safety regulations, contributes to infection control, and utilizes proper aseptic technique in performance of duties, monitors patients according to levels of observations i.e. (I:I Veterans as well as Veterans observation status.), draws ordered laboratory specimens except for type and screen, inserts peripherally inserted vascular devices, performs wound dressing changes per orders, performs sterile dressing changes.

The Student Trainee (Student Nurse Technician) may perform theses duties in a variety of health care settings such as outpatient, inpatient, home or community living care, acute, sub-acute, and mental health.

Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level GS-5 without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Work Schedule: Minimum of 16 hours per month, maximum 40 hours per week. Rotating shifts with flexibility around school schedule days, evenings, and nights.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/07/2022.

Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled.

You may qualify based on education and as described below:

Grade Determination: Education:

  • GS-2 Completed High school or equivalent
  • GS-3 Completion of 1 academic year of post-high school study
  • GS-4 Completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study or associate's degree
  • GS-5 Completion of final semester of the junior year
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
