Duties

Help
  • GS-06: Gathers, compiles and recommends improvements for developed and dispersed recreation sites on the unit.
  • GS-06: Is the point of contact with community organizations and interest groups to generate interest in and utilization of forest recreation facilities.
  • GS-06: May Serve as COR determining when contracting is the best means to complete a project. Works with contracting personnel to describe the job and develop specifications and a bid package.
  • GS-06: Inspect recreation areas, areas of concentrated public use, and special use permits for compliance with the permit and management plans, public health regulations, and safety plans.
  • GS-07: Plans projects based on priority and other requirements such as number of personnel required, length of time, etc.
  • GS-07: Conducts assigned portions of surveys and studies of recreation trail areas, facilities, and activities on the unit.
  • GS-07: Assists with putting together project proposals and with conducting studies for providing input in National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) project analysis.
  • GS-07: Monitors and maintains existing trails, facilities, etc. to ensure they are in operable condition. Assists with the selection and recommendation of new trail and facility locations or with the closing of old sites.
  • GS-06 and GS-07: Performs supervisory duties.

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-06 Level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level;
OR one full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, recreation management programs, civil or forest engineering, wildland fire science, public administration and planning (including community and urban planning), landscape architecture; resources management, environmental sciences, or other biological sciences;
OR combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
Examples of specialized experience are: Inspect or maintain developed recreation facilities; lead or coordinate a small crew of employees or volunteers to accomplish recreation maintenance or trail construction projects; patrol developed or dispersed forest areas to monitor use or enforce federal regulations; serve as a fee collection officer; patrol use areas, making visitor contacts and providing visitor information; identifies or recommends corrective action for safety hazards within public use areas.

For the GS-07 Level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level;
OR one full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, recreation management programs, civil or forest engineering, wildland fire science, public administration and planning (including community and urban planning), landscape architecture; resources management, environmental sciences, or other biological sciences;
OR combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
Examples of specialized experience are: Working with community organizations or interest groups or volunteers to assist with recreation facility maintenance or projects; assisting in the development of plans for recreation area maintenance, rehabilitation, reconstruction, or construction projects; serving as an inspector and/or contracting officer's representative on service contracts ensuring work is completed properly; participating in Special Use Permit administration for activities within undeveloped or developed areas of the unit, documenting findings.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This announcement may be used to fill positions with a seasonal work schedule where full-time work is guaranteed for 18 pay periods (18/8 Seasonal) or 13 pay periods (13/13 Seasonal) and when not working, you will be placed in non-pay/non-duty status.

Backcountry/remote travel and hiking over rugged terrain with potential inclement weather and extended periods of overnight camping may be required dependent on location.
